Living near a criminal

Would you be comfortable with this? My aunt in the States just found out that a convicted sex offender lives a few blocks away from her. He's been there for two years and she didn't know about it until she talked to another neighbour who told her to look his name up online. Unlike many in the neighbourhood, she doesn't give two **** really (then again she doesn't have kids).

If they brought a system in like that where you could view any criminal near you not just pedos/sex offenders, what would cross the line for you in terms of comfort?

I live about 2 minutes walk from the residence of a pedophile .

have not put eyes on the man in about 5 years… he’d be in his early to mid 70’s, total recluse…he was convicted of abusing his daughter…in the late ‘90s… did time for it..

the rumour is he only will leave his place after dark.. he has a big black van parked on his drive blocking the view of the front of the property…it’s never moved as long as I’ve been here…

I was visiting my bro-in-law in Seattle when a flyer was dropped in the door from the local police department. The flyer has pictures [front and side profile] age/height/conviction, etc - everything bar the address of a convicted/former sex offender who was relocating to the neighbourhood. Scary thoughts I said to myself, but seemingly the local police have a duty to inform residents!

I'd only be worried if my home was within burning distance from his. High risk of it being torched to the ground at some stage, it should be the same risk to an insurance company as living beside a river.

Every state has a website that details what criminals are living in your area (put in your zip code & it lists them). It's a good idea, can make informed decisions about where to live when choosing a new property.

Yea but the more important question is, which criminal would you rather live near. This might be controversial but I'd rather live near a sex offender than a murderer.

I'd be the opposite. Certainly in this country, very few murderers are repeat offenders. Most are just a once off. A huge amount of sex offenders are repeat offenders though and, in my opinion, can never be trusted.

BTW, back on topic, 'criminals' are literally everywhere, both convicted and non-convicted. The level of criminality and nature of the crimes differs obviously but by definition anyone convicted of a criminal offence is a criminal. Doesn't always make them a bad person obviously.

Most sex offenders are family members or known to the family. The neighbourhood bogeyman sexual abuser doesn't really happen.

The majority are as you describe but there's also a huge number of the bogeyman version as well so it's certainly not a case of 'doesn't really happen'.

Most murderers killed once, and more often then not they knew their victim, there are not many murderers who are going around killing people!

Their post makes perfect sense.

You could check the list and find a locality with no criminals living there and buy a property, and then the next day any number of criminals could move there.

People move house, criminals included, so such a list wouldn't be worth much. At least, not without something that means criminals can't move house.

I’d be more concerned with living very near someone with low level convictions like antisocial behaviour for repeatedly cutting the grass at 5 in the morning or burning plastic rubbish in the back garden than the big ticket stuff like murder, rape, genocide, treason, etc.

There's a few criminals living in my estate , not many and they're all for nothing major.

There was a dirty paedo living not far from my estate that got caught with child pics again last year but thankfully he took out the trash himself so fook him and good riddance.

Exactly. I don’t know why in 2021 people still don’t realise that it’s highly likely, especially in areas of high population density, that there are many sex offenders of one type or another living very near them.

The fact that these people have not yet, nor may not ever, be “caught” doesn’t make them any less dangerous.

It just means that in terms of your personal safety, and that of your loved ones, you should proceed with this fact in mind.

Most people are too comfortable and prefer to think that everyone is responsible for their safety, but themselves. Same attitude is apparent on boards too a lot.
