1/2 Mill my arse. With those finishes that’s a 1/2mill refurb without the purchase price. Fabulous job, but wish them luck with the Revenue audit they’re about to have.

Same craic on this one, mentioned how cold the original house was at the start then no more about it, would have liked to see which heating system they used? how they insulated it? practical stuff, likes the oul plamausing that guy, he's on screen too much, the build should be the star not him

That hot tub alone must be close to 10k.

True, any shuttered reinforced concrete doesn't come cheap.

Very cocky and well off family...the kids are only about 7 or 8 and they're saying they'll be in Riverdance or Lord of the Dance...

    I don't like it.

The view is a beaut but the house itself...it wouldn't be for me.

Who knows, I'd say they are pulling the figures out of their behind.

Its a tv show, they can literally say whatever figures they want and who is to know any better.

Thought that too, imagine the original cottage was at least dry-lined. At least they didn't go digging up the floor in pursuit of fancy under floor heating revealing a structural issue which had to be sorted!

"I wanna spend some money, but I don't wanna spend a load a money on something no one is ever gonna see"

    🙄

Didn't notice the flooring, but the supplier list mentions polished concrete. So they may have dug up the cottage floor.

You can play with the final budget too. Is it the build cost or the cost with everything right down to the soft furnishings. Some very fancy finishes. Big money in any case, but much better value than last week's. I really feel for that couple.

So do we think that the final bungalow will come in on budget, given that the architects house on great house revival when aired came in slightly under budget?

The views are utterly amazing but if I had the choice, I would buy a cheaper holiday villa in sunnier climates and not do such expensive renovation on a cliff edge in rain soaked Donegal.

I'm just stunned at the divide that's happening in this country, it must be coming from America and their Dallas type mansions.

Well to be fair their parents were in Riverdance. Their parents run an Irish dancing school. So it's not really beyond the realms of possibility that they will continue in their parents footsteps (dance steps 😅) if they want to.

You have to laugh really. This programme highlights the absolute scutter that comes out of the architects mouths.

Hugh looks at the finished article and says "looking back, it's the sheer simplicity of the architecture, the natural timbers etc.

Then at the end the architect says "we've really pushed the boundaries of architecture"

    Which is it? 🤣

My comments on My Bungalow Bliss on 15th Dec.

It was a wonderful Architectural design given the financial constraints.

They stated that it cost approx €140k +€350k. I would think it cost more.

Buying property and renovating is an investment only. Was it a good investment- the only way to answer that question- is to offer it for sale.

    Congratulations to McCabe Architects.

Well done to Hugh for an enjoyable show.

yeah as much as I love Donegal I wouldnt want a holiday home there as you cant guarantee the weather. Still though when its lashing rain theyve a pretty nice house to cosy up in.

They must be dong pretty well with the dance school to be able to afford all that, I didnt hear any mention of a loan or mortgage either in the program.

The original cottage tonight was perfect as a holiday or weekend home - in my opinion they could have just upgraded the original cottage instead of extending - the end result was good but it's no longer the traditional cottage it was. It's the views that made the house special - take away the views and it's just an ok house. I don't think I would be able to sleep at night there for fear the house would end up in the sea.

Do Yee think they were being honest on the final amount it cost - I don't think they were. I didn't warm to tonight's couple at all.

    He's a chartered accountant too.

To be fair he seemed to reign in on the frilly extras. He kept that spreadsheet fairly updated....still blew the budget but in a more controlled way.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,589 ✭✭✭standardg60

I'd say he was well in control of the budget, note the frameless corners were abandoned, and the 2700 saving on the marble splashback for the kitchen, i mean 3000 for a splashback?

My other comments on My Bungalow Bliss on 15th Dec.

    1. There should certainly be a Chartered Quantity Surveyor on these shows. A QS will give the final cost before the building works commence.
    2. Children should not be allowed on Building Sites.
    3. Everyone (workers and visitors) on this Building Site should be wearing Safety Shoes, Hi Vis vest, Safety Hat, Safety Goggles etc.
    4. I cannot understand why RTÉ or Insurers do not insist on a Safety Official for these Construction Projects. -(Rust film production / Alec Baldwin catastrophe comes to mind).
    5. The Window / Patio doors etc were very expensive. How the Manufacturers, Architects, Builders allow these glazed units on any building site without Clingrap on the glazed units and frames is incompetent and unbelievable as it is so cheap. Scratch Glass cannot be Unscratched.

Where in Ireland can you guarantee the weather?

They spent years with Riverdance, so probably earned some nice money during that period.

I know someone who toured with them for years, had no real outgoings or expenses during that time, and bought a house almost outright with how much they were able to save during that period.

Not sure if it turned out exactly like this, but why not have two entrances, and separate bedrooms, rather than the weirdly designed layout and having to pass through one, to get to the other.

3 bedrooms, all in the old bungalow. Plans can be seen on the Donegal Co Co site.

I think it was hard to warm to them as it was a holiday home , jealousy creeps in even when you don't want it to.

I very much doubt they'll use it every weekend. It's a pain in the arse working full time and living between two houses. Plus the kids will want to be with their friends at the weekend etc.

I can see that house being listed on air bnb hence the two sets of bunk beds.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,662 ✭✭✭Princess Calla

Yeah Hugh had some bitchy comment over that. Ffs it's a splashback who really gives a sh1te once it serves it's purpose and is kept clean.

I thought it was lovely anyway.

The only things I didn't really like were the gold fittings in the bathroom...thought that was abit tacky.

The rest of the build was gorgeous once you get over the tiny matter of cliff erosion 🙈.

Looking at the planning drawing, there was no curved wall and the bedroom had its own entrance. A different layout with a curved wall and a relocated bedroom was submitted later, but withdrawn. On the layout you've posted it looks like the introduced the curved wall and removed the bedroom entrance to allow for a larger bathroom.
