And I'm not sure how long a Munster coach would last conceding 40+ points in 4 of the last 5 meetings with Leinster either.

What? You want a guy who has you playing fantastic rugby but losing more than you win? On current form I wouldn't want Friend anywhere near Munster. Great guy on TV and Twitter, not so great at getting results.

All relative to the resources at hand connacht have a smaller population there was talk of getting rid if them a decade or so ago they should have beaten us earlier despite us having in my opinion a vastly more talented squad. Even look at mcfarland in ulster.

Does anyone here feel that with the status quo we will win anything this year?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 26,131 ✭✭✭✭phog

Well whatever about the status quo not winning us anything the one thing we do know is changing a coach doesn't necessarily bring us success. We have more than our share of churn with coaches

  • Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 13,004 Mod ✭✭✭✭Cookiemunster

What may I ask has McFarland done then? Yes they beat Leinsters mainly second string, but either side of that they lost to Connacht (heavily) and Ospreys. Last season they lost both their Champions Cup group games. JVG would be hammered for those results (and did get hammered for losing to Ospreys this season).

I mean, yes there are better coaches out there than JVG, but I wouldn't be knocking the door down for either Friend or McFarland.

And we won't win anything under this caching team, but a different coaching setup won't win anything either. We're not as good as Leinster (nobody in the league is) and we're not one of the top 4-5 teams in Europe either.

TOC in Indo says De Allende is most likely to leave at the end of the season

He isnt the coach to bring Munster to the next level. What is the evidence that keeping him will actually get Munster any further so if not then why persist with him. Munster havent used anywhere near enough of the improved academy under van grann. he has led Munster to scrape through to latter stages of competition only then to fail without doing enough

he's picked his own coaches, been able to sign some very big name players and still not got any further so why keep him when he isnt going to bring the success.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,673 ✭✭✭Lost Ormond

compare the resources each have. Friend and Connacht are competing with resources far far less than Munster in every single area.

Tangential to this, I'm reading the Keith Earls book at the moment. He had a line where he reckoned one fundamental problem in Munster's lack of success was the turnover of coaches. He also reckoned the best ever Munster performance he was involved with was the Clermont game last year.

I get there's a "what do you expect a current player to say" element to it, but both of those things go in JVG's favour.

Another interesting point was the level of detail and stats he went into that were measured, just on his speed. It gave an insight into the amount of metrics that must be monitored for every game and training session. It'd give you pause for thought, especially when you see rudimentary pass, tackle and carry stats being rolled out on here as definitive proof Player X should be replaced by Player Y.

De Allende should sign for one of the top French clubs, he’d surely command the highest salary for any 12 in world rugby, and he’d probably rather go to South of France to a club that could be European champions.

If we can keep Chris Farrell and convince him to play 12 (Goggin as backup), I think De Allende won’t be such a loss, we could really start using 13 more as an attack channel, anyone with speed, Earls/Coombes/Daly/Nash/Zebo/Gallagher etc.

we've reached continuous semi finals(and finals) under JVG, only losing to leinster sarries and Toulouse?

There's been improvement, and we've only lost to the best in europe in that year.

Changing coach now and uprooting the entire system wont bring us any closer to success, it'll only push us back years

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,851 ✭✭✭✭aloooof

To be fair to him, he's definitely started playing more young and academy players in the last 1-2 years, tho. 9 of those academy players got promoted last season.

What stats on his speed? His acceleration and his times over different distances? Like, 10m up to 150m, maybe?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 26,131 ✭✭✭✭phog

Our resources aren't on par to Leinster's so maybe Munster are at a level comparable to their resources.

How do we compare in resource terms to Ulster? While neither of us will win much Id say Munster are better performers year on year.

Counter movement jumps for leg strength, fastest time over 10m, fastest time over 30m, max metre's per second hit during games from their GPS trackers.

To be clear I don't want jvg out at all but if he decides to go to Bath I won't be wailing in the street he's fine

The stats pretty much bear out that Munster have been better during JVG's tenure. In Europe, they have 2 SF appearances vs 2 QF appearances, Munster invariably getting knocked out by the winner or runners-up.

Domestically, I spelled out as much in the following post recently to a certain poster who contended Ulster were better:

2020/21: Munster and Ulster finished tied with 64.

2019/20: Munster finished on 51 vs Ulster 44.

2018/19: Munster finished on 77 vs Ulster 63.

2017/18: Munster finished on 69 vs Ulster 62.

And if you consider Leinster the bar (and since it's the Leinster thread), Munster have gotten significantly closer over the last 4 seasons. If we exclude the Rainbow Cup, they've each only enjoyed 1 home win, in the 2018/19 season. Ulster won by 1 point, Munster by 9. But more telling is the deficit of the losses, in reverse-chronological order:

    Munster: 10, 3, 10, 2, 7, 15, 8, 1, 10, 6

    Ulster: 19, 12, 22, 18, 12, 4, 33, 31, 15

This was before Ulster's recent win in the RDS, so kudos to them for that, mind.

    Nonsense outdated view tbh

Ben healy 24 caps at 22

Fineen wycherly 67 caps at 23

    Coombes 41 caps at 23

Hodnet was breaking through as starter prior to a fairly brutal Injury

    Jos 20 caps at 23

    Casey 33 caps at 22

    Barron 17 caps at 23

Josh wycherly 11 caps at 22 (as a prop)

Tom ahern 9 caps at 21

Keenan know 18 caps at 22 (as a prop)

Kendellan got 2 caps as a 19 year old

Plenty of youth being played its a criticism that carrys no weight at this point

To be clear, I'm the same, if he decides to go or Munster decide they want to try another coach then I'm fine with that but I've watched coaches come and go at Munster and we've seen no success so I'm not one of those who thinks far away fields are greener.

Valid point to be fair. If for stability alone it may be worth keeping him

I would expect so with the SA team now in the URC etc they have more money and DeAllende will be shipping home for the WC. The other lad who has been very unlucky with injuries I expect to jump ship as well.

In regards to JVG if the fans are happy then no reason why he should move on.

I am not sure why people are questioning Andy Friend, I think he has done an excellent job with Connacht with massively limited resources compared to some of the other provinces. It would be interesting to see what he could do with a large squad and budget

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 26,131 ✭✭✭✭phog

Both of these points are stupid arguments really.

"In regards to JVG if the fans are happy then no reason why he should move on."

Do you mean from JVG's side of things or from the board / IRFU's side of things? Either way, I'm not sure it makes that much of a difference tbh.

The position of the fans won't be that significant a factor when the powers that be are trying to determine whether to offer him a new contract.

Equally, JVG's personal situation is likely to be a far more significant factor for him in determining whether he should sign another contract. (You only need to look at Larkham for that).

It would be interesting to see Joe Smith coaching Munster.

The man goes out of his way to call foreign players such as Vakhtang Abdaladze, Alexis Soroka and Christiaan Johan Stander by their full titles, but then spells Joe Schmidt as Joe Smith .
