Hi. I got this text a short while ago from a number that has sent genuine messages in the past. Is it real?

BOI: An attempt to login from a new device has been detected, if this was NOT you use the following link to secure your account: 365-accountsupport.com

    Thanks

Hi there, thanks for checking in with us here.

This is certainly a fraudulent SMS you have received. if you could delete this from your device.

BOI will never send you an SMS that includes a link. Our Security Team are managing this for us.

Just to add, fraudsters can imitate the sender ID 'BOI' and when the text hits your phone it will go into the thread BOI with your genuine messages from ourselves.

Hoping this helps, thanks for your vigilance, always feel free to check in with us if you are unsure.

    Many thanks

    Alison

    Hi there,

Just to let you know I received this text earlier.

A 1212.51 EUR Standing Order to 'Synix LTD' was granted. For additional information, go to contact365support.com

This is clearly a scam, I mistakenly clicked the link after I finished work as it appeared inline with other messages from BOI, nothing loaded in the browser on my phone. I’m annoyed that I clicked the link, not sure what it was meant to do as I don’t have a BOI app or account details on my phone anywhere

    Thanks,

    Ray

and check for your peace of mind

    Hi,

    Thanks for getting in touch.

I can confirm that this is a fraudulent message. Bank of Ireland will never contact you by phone/text/email asking for you to disclose your account information by following a link. Thank you for taking the time to check this with us and for being vigilant.

    Thanks, Megan

Same. Came into phone on the same number I get official Bank of Ireland texts form.

    Hi,

Thanks for getting in touch with us here on Boards.ie.

I completely understand your concern with this. It is easy for fraudsters to do this unfortunately. If they use the same sender ID of 'BOI' your phone will presume it is coming from the same source as before. They do this to make their text appear more genuine. I hope this clarifies.

    Thanks, Megan

I received yet another scam message from "BOI" today. What needs to be done to get Bank of Ireland to actually do something about this? This problem was solved in the UK. Do the banks here have any plans to tackle it or are you just going to keep paying Baz to tell us to be careful and hope for the best?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,346 ✭✭✭Bank of Ireland: Tara

    Hi steve-o,

    Thanks for your post.

If you have received a text claiming to be from Bank of Ireland please forward a screenshot to 365security@boi.com and our security team will investigate.

In an effort to tackle online fraud we are running a fraud awareness campaign which includes: media adverts, emails to customers, alerts on customer log in screens, recorded messages on our phone lines, in branch signage and brochures. Our security team investigate all reported phishing sites and proactively work to locate sites not yet reported and work to have these shut down. We work with industry peers through FraudSMART to keep up to date with the latest fraudster tactics and share this information on our website security zone here.

    Thanks

    Tara

So, I take it from that non-answer that the bank aren't actually doing anything to get a block on SMS messages fraudulently using the "BOI" sender code?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,025 ✭✭✭daheff

Maybe it's time companies like BOI start pressuring ComReg to stop allowing this spoofing on the SMS system.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 915 ✭✭✭steve-o

Or maybe the other way round. Since the banks apparently have no will to fix this properly, maybe it's time for ComReg and the Financial Regulator to step in and force the banks and mobile phone operators to get their act together. I'd be delighted if the reps came back here to tell us they are actually working on it.

Anyone else affected by the scam where €6 is taken out of your account per month under the guise of "maintenance fee"? This could do with being clamped down on too.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 23,101 ✭✭✭✭ELM327

I was, but there's an easy fix, called Revolut

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 275 ✭✭stopthevoting

"This problem was solved in the UK"

Could you explain more about this? As far as I am aware scam texts are a worldwide problem, including in the UK. I have heard of this very recently in the UK.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 915 ✭✭✭steve-o

The UK scheme doesn't stop scammers, but it does prevent Sender ID Spoofing, a key tool of successful scams. So if used here, only BOI would be able to send a message from "BOI" and only the HSE would be able to send messages from "HSE". https://mobileecosystemforum.com/sms-senderid-protection-registry/

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,025 ✭✭✭daheff

In fairness, the banks have nothing to do with the spoofing text messages. They can't stop somebody sending them. Networks can however, but choose not to do it. Needs ComReg to force them to implement change to stop this.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 275 ✭✭stopthevoting

Thanks for the info. According to that page it has also been launched in Ireland. "Following the success in the UK, the Ireland SMS SenderID Protection Registry was launched on 1st July 2021. Supported by all 3 MNO’s, 9 Merchants – 3 major Government agencies + Banks, Retailers & Utilities from commencement." Is it not working yet?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 915 ✭✭✭steve-o

That's good news. I wasn't aware of that. Maybe BOI can explain why I'm still getting spam messages from "BOI".

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,473 ✭✭✭beachhead

Didn't Uncle Joe tell phone companies in the US to sort it or else earlier this year?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 35,598 ✭✭✭✭NIMAN

OH got one of these type messages yesterday, and most worrying of all, it appears in her text stream from BOI.

This makes them even more convincing, when they appear in the same link as genuine messages you've received from BOI.

How do the fraudsters do this?

    Hi There,

I understand your concern with the text appearing beside genuine Bank of Ireland texts but unfortunately it is quite easy for the fraudsters to do this – if they use a sender ID of ‘BOI’, your phone assumes that the text is coming from the same place that used that ID before. The fraudsters do this obviously to make their message appear genuine.

    Thanks, Aisling
