Watched Army of Thieves with the missus last night. She'd seen the trailer and was interested, I'd watched the Army of the Dead and wasn't. She hadn't bothered with the Dead - a couple of minutes of the hyper-stylised opening of that film was enough to put her off when I stuck it on - I should have listened to her rather than persevering with it - what a slog of a movie. So when we sat down to watch Thieves I was expecting very, very little but I was pleasantly surprised. It's not a masterpiece by any means and the ending runs out of steam as it awkwardly segues into the Dead story. Zombies are referenced sporadically throughout but add nothing to the story overall.

Matthias Schweighöfer does a good job though of manning the helm as director and star and the charm of his performance does a lot to propel the story along - even allowing me to overlook the moments when his tics are just that bit too stupid. There's also none of that awful shallow depth of focus cinematography that afflicted the Army of the Dead and made it look like you were viewing the action through lenses smeared with Vaseline.

At the end of the day, it's a fairly bog-standard but entertaining heist movie set in the Snyder universe that thankfully isn't directed by Zack Snyder and doesn't have many, if any, of his overwrought tricks and turns.

I will watch ‘the killing of a sacred deer’. It was on film4 once only I think and I missed it, so it’s always been a difficult film to catch. Not a fan of Colin but Barry Keoghan is meant to be good in it.

I've searched for this to add it to my list but it doesn't seem to be on Irish Netflix.

I watched The Trip last night, Noomi Rapace and Aksel Hennie. A dark comedy about a dysfunctional couple each planning to kill the other for their life insurance on a weekend trip. Well worth a look. Very violent in places but funny and entertaining nonetheless.

Watched the 3 seasons of Mr Inbetween - really good series. Mix of dark humour and crime. Well worth watching.

Also watched this at the weekend, TBH, its a bit disappointing that we know where the main character eventually ends up, while not a perfect film by any stretch of the imagination, its amusing enough in its own way, and also knows exactly what it is - the scene immediately before the first heist for example. I'd watch another movie around the further adventures of Sebastien, gwen and Korina.

Watched the first two episodes of Godless earlier, a western as the title suggests, shows promise so far.

Got to episode 3 and gave up. Just found it too PC and unrealistic, give me Deadwood any day.

I see Honey Boy was added over the weekend, Shia LaBeouf's semi-autobiographical story about his time as a child actor and his relationship with his father. The script was originally written as therapy during court-mandated rehab so it's pretty raw and unflinching. The cast all give amazing performances in it and it is a fascinating watch. Since I watched it, a lot of information came out about LaBeouf's treatment of FKA Twigs, one of the stars of the film who became his girlfriend, and the allegations of domestic violence from her and a previous girlfriend. It definitely curdles the redemptive arc shown at the end of the film and it might colour your choice in whether you want to watch the film or not but I think it's one to see. There's a certain irony in watching a child actor in a film about how badly child actors are treated but LaBeouf's circumstances seemed have been particularly rough. Watch it if you can but it's not an easy ride.

I've been wanting to watch this but have not for the reasons you state. I've only heard very good things about the movie itself.

Enjoyed Churchill's Secret Agents: The New Recruits over the past two nights: it mixes documentary with reality show by putting a number of members of the public through the same training as the SOE Agents of the 40's. Looked like great fun to be a part of!

Watched Colin in Black & White as have an interest in American Football and remember Kaepernick having a great couple of seasons with the 49ers. Felt like there was an interesting story to tell as there was a lot of graft behind his success but the show’s agenda takes precedence over it which made it tougher to get through.

Watched this last night, pretty decent film. To be honest I didn't think he had it that rough growing up going by this. Sure, his old man was not a saint, but I wouldn't say watching this was difficult at all or particularly rough. The kid says some horrible things and he slapped him a few times which was deserved. If this was the sum total of domestic violence in Shia's life, he did pretty well I would say considering his father was a rodeo clown. The old man had his demons but I think the film tried to show he was not that bad a guy, struggled with his own issues, but ultimately did his best for his kid that he could under the circumstances.

Lebouf's biggest issue is that he has let his ego run away. He knows this well himself, this is the crux of the film and it starts showing itself when the kid is 12 years old, and got worse and worse, and the first scene in the movie in the cop car demonstrates that. Its a very honest look inward for sure, he does not seem like a well person at all, and if the older him is a realistic portrayal of him in reality which I'd expect it is, he seems a very unlikeable guy.

The Harder They Fall - Starring Jonathan Majors, Idris Elba, Zazie Beetz, Regina King, Delroy Lindo and LaKeith Stanfield, the film follow outlaw Nat Love (Jonathan Majors) who discovers that his enemy Rufus Buck (Idris Elba) is being released from prison and rounds up his gang to track Rufus down and seek revenge. Those riding with him in this assured, righteously new school Western include his former love Stagecoach Mary (Zazie Beetz), his right and left hand men — hot-tempered Bill Pickett (Edi Gathegi) and fast drawing Jim Beckwourth (R.J. Cyler)—and a surprising adversary-turned-ally. Rufus Buck has his own fearsome crew, including “Treacherous” Trudy Smith (Regina King) and Cherokee Bill (LaKeith Stanfield), and they are not a group that knows hoSilenced (2011) 2hr 4m [18] (Korean) Amid a multitude of cover-ups, a caring teacher attempts to publicly expose faculty members who are molesting some hearing-impaired studentsw to lose.

Really looking forward to The Harder They Fall, good westerns are hard to come by these days and the trailer looked very promising. And what a cast!

Harder they fall is not there yet….

I watched Honey Boy as well last night. I read he had a relationship with his co-star FKA Twigs who had to get a restraining order against him so he has a few issues that he needs to deal with.

+1 on this recommendation, watched it at the weekend and while the violence is OTT it somehow adds to the comedy, genuinely funny movie and hilarious in parts.

Whatever you do watch it in the original Norwegian, saw the trailer afterwards which was dubbed and the voices were very phony sounding.
