I agree that the officiating in the league is poor. However it's interesting that Friend has mentioned this through the media, especially after the Erasmus fiasco. Now to be fair Friend hasn't issued an hour long video condemning the official's performance but he has voiced hope that their are repercussions for the TMO who missed the offside. He needs to be careful. The league might not be too tolerant, especially given the effort gone into rebranding.

Because not everything is the same. There is so much more to look at than simply say its the same infringement and should also be penalised. which is something that has been explained to you before and that you cant seem to grasp.

The same poster must be absolutely outraged by Johnny McNicholl's late tackle on Ben Healy last week. Shame he didn't mention it. I wonder why.

Reading his comments I don't think he said anything near being worthy of being repirmanded to be honest.

Greg Garner was in the position from 2017 up until August. Ed Morrison was in position before him as referee commissioner. I assume that the timing of Garner leaving hasn't helped in finding a replacement quickly.

"I hope something happens to the TMO". To be fair that's far more explicit that anything Erasmus said. I don't disagree with the sentiment and I don't for one minute think that Beirne was onside but Friend ought to tread carefully. Managers criticising officials won't be tolerated, regardless of whether they have good reason.

I was wondering that just as I was clicking post...

Taken in isolation yeah, but taken with everything else

It may have a shiny new logo and a brand new format, but the United Rugby Championship (URC) does not have a referees’ manager and so Friend has nowhere to take his complaints this week ahead of his side’s meeting with Ulster on Saturday night.

“It’s a great question, I don’t have the answer,” he said when asked how he could follow up on the issue.

“We don’t have a referees’ manager, so I’m assuming that URC will be looking at that and hopefully something happens to the TMO that missed it. But it doesn’t help us, mate.”

He's just talking about the review process. Gerry Thornley was on the Craggy podcast and said he didn't think Friend had said anything that would get him in bother.

I've previously explained to you that I have no intention of going there again with you, so we can cut out the shadow boxing, I've my view and you have yours and for me that's grand but my view for some reason seems to grate you and that is not my intention so best we ignore each other's discussion re refs and poor calls.

I mean whether taken in isolation or within the broader context of his reply he still said be believes the TMO should face consequences for his performance. He's calling the TMO's judgement into question. Now don't get me wrong, he's spot on about the officiating and Beirne was well offside. However, officials are somewhat of a protected species and it's not a smart move being overly critical in public, especially in light of the Erasmus blow-up.

I don't disagree with Friend's misgivings, I just think he should exercise a bit more caution. There's also the fact that Connacht took the lead after the disputed try. They were leading with less than 10 to go. Their issues with restarts were as much a factor in the loss as poor officiating.

He flat out said the decision was wrong, but that happens all the time, coaches constantly say that after games so there's basically no chance he'll be sanctioned for it.

The wording "something happens" might sound sinister but it's not like he's threatening him or anything, he's talking about a performance review - which is a standard part of pro reffing, and pointing out that there's currently no way for coaches/teams to flag issues post game - which should be standard.

Wait and see if anything comes back on him, but personally I doubt it. A few comments in a post match interview aren't really comparable to what Erasmus got up to.

And yep Connacht absolutely could have won the game regardless, but that's a whole other barrell of fish.

Think Connacht would be better off winning the easy games, than whining the tough ones :D

This poor me attitude is really getting old.

Oi Connacht! Go look for a sugar daddy, get some signings, stop losing easy games and clean your room! :D

Whatever about the offside, Beirne's control and chip were top notch. He could well be Ireland’s most skilful forward.

My issue is you have a gripe after most games. You cant seem to grasp that officials will make mistakes. You bring them up. The mistakes also even out over a season and sides that are getting to semi finals and finals of competitions will "get" decisions from refs far more than they will end up on the wrong side of decisions. Complaining/whining after a lot of games about a few decisions/even 1 decision which you seem to do is a bit ridiculous especially when Munster will benefit far more than they will lose out. Dont bring up refs missing something(missing a decision in most cases isnt a poor call) after a lot of games then.

Not sure why you're picking on Phog there. Literally everyone on here, except for yourself, criticises referees for something or other. Fair enough you referee yourself, but it's an open forum and people are entitled to say how they feel. I'd suggest that if you don't like seeing referee criticism then you shouldn't come into threads where matches are being discussed.

  • Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 5,000 Mod ✭✭✭✭Lost Ormond

I do criticise refs when its warranted. It is an open forum but you cant have a gripe about the officials after a significant majority of games especially when your team loses. Most criticism of officials isnt warranted or valid criticism. Refs make mistakes, just like players, coaches and anyone else. Theyre human. Cant do anything about that and people complaining about officials do nothing and suggest nothing as a way to change the standards of officials... why is that?

Tickets are now available for the Wasps game.

    A Cat A ticket (Section 20) is £60 + £3 booking fee.

The exact same seat for Saracens vs Munster in 2019 was £50 + £5 booking fee and that was a Champions Cup Semi

Ah it really doesn't bother me, I'm well used to the witch hunt.

The irony of you using witch hunt considering your approach to match officials....

The standard of officiating in the league has been fairly abject for a long time now and the TMO's call at the weekend may be up there among the worst ever decisions.

I don't buy into the "these things even themselves out over the season" trope. They do not. Far too often bad decisions have material impacts on the outcome of matches.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,985 ✭✭✭shootermacg

Why is it that we save our worst performance of the year for Connacht? I mean come on, Connacht are only good for the odd game. The hand-me-downs really get whipped up playing their old clubs and give 120%, Pity they follow them up with losses to other poor teams.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,857 ✭✭✭typhoony

OK so not a great start to this season but last year pro14 connacht had 8 wins and 8 losses and even a few of those losses were very tight games, so this myth that Connacht are only good for a few games is untrue. They do lack consistency is somewhat true

Limerick Leader saying JvG has said there will be changes for next week and we should see new faces. He also said Murray may feature in the squad.

ThreeRedKings is saying that Damian de Allende is back with Munster which is great news.

DDA is back training with the squad, but also called back into the SA squad for the AIs.

Rory Scannell is following the RTPPs.

    Thomas Ahern is sick.

Keynan Knox is back in training.

How did you find out? I entered the lottery but I haven't heard back from them, I wonder does that mean I was unsuccessful?
