is a licence needed to use a hand held vhf radio on a boat.

    just wondering if a licence is needed to use a handheld vhf radio in a boat ?

    Yes, It's actually called a SRC (Short Range Certificate), and is required to use any VHF (hand held or fixed).

    Then once you have an SRC, you can get an SRL (Ships Radio Licence) for the boat. This will then give the vessel a callsign, as well as an MMSI number (if the vhf radio has DSC (Digital Selective Calling)).


    Bear in mind though if you have a VHF with you, and need to raise an emergency with the Coast Guard, they are not going to look for your SRC before they dispatch any rescue services to you, or not provide assistance because you don't have an SRC.....

    I would still however recommend doing the SRC course, as it teaches you how to transmit a Mayday or Pan-Pan correctly.

    If you are looking to do the course see is there a NFC centre near you. Cost 175 to do mine, only disadvantage is they smear it out over 3 days when its usually only 2
