Yep, he does get praise but on here it would be very few and far between I'd assume? There's a certain narrative that goes with Fred but he really is a very good player with plenty to offer a team.

I wouldn't say needless but if a good offer came in for him let him go tomorrow.

We will manage without him at CB even if Maguire and Varane are injured, and even if Lindelof goes down we have AWB who could slot in there in an emergency.

Or as suggested, can go to a back 3 with shawn or Mctominay slotting in even Matic tbh.

Keeping guys on the off chance they might be needed is how you end up one or two injuries away from Jones starting. Shouldn't be an option because he shouldn't be at the club.

But **** it, if he did have to start in an emergency I'd be fine with that too. Longer run would need investment obviously

I didn't know Maguire, Varane, Shaw and McTominay are all injured.

Or that there is a guarantee that all 4 WILL be injured at once.

Turning down offers "just in case" is how we ended up with Rojo as 5th/6th choice CB, Romero 4th choice goalkeeper and Darmian 3rd/4th full back all nowhere near an arsès roar of getting on the pitch and all costing wages and getting naff all transfer fee.

    I take your point.

But Bailly signed a new contract less than 6 months ago. He's contracted to summer '24 (with Utd. having the option for another year). Sell him in January. Or sell him next Summer. Don't think it realistically makes much difference in terms of the price we'd get. Where's the rush to offload him so quickly? Why risk it and leave us short of centre backs in a key part of the season?

Maguire has been run into the ground the last two seasons. And has lately started picking up injuries (not surprising). We need to manage the defensive players better imo. You need four reliable centre backs to cover what is a long season.

Maybe the 3 CB formation is a possibility. But I haven't seen Ole play it in a long time. It went badly wrong in the Leipzig game last year and he has generally avoided it since.

No. Phil Jones is still here because the accountants running the club didn't want him to leave for free, so they gave him a new long-term contract.

But being accountants, they didn't factor in the fact that he's shite and injury prone as f*ck. So they could extend his contract all they liked and nobody would buy him.

And here we are 3 years down the line and Phil Jones is still of absolutely no use to us, just like he was when he got the new deal. Except instead of letting him leave, like an actual football club would have, we've been paying him £80'000 a week for the last 3 years.

    The genius of Manchester United.

I should really have stopped reading when you suggested playing AWB as a centre back in a back 4. I mean jesus christ.

Phil Jones is here cause of the accountants running the club wanting to spend more money on a devaluing asset with no resale value.

    Seems legit.

Anyway if AWB being able to fill in at centre back in an emergency is too much for your brain to handle I guess your probably right, don't read much. Don't overload yourself. 👍🏻

Shaw and McTominay aren't playing CB in a back 4. And Ole is tactically inept enough as it is, the last thing we need is him trying to switch to a whole new system because we get one injury.

When you have 4 centre backs and 2 of them are currently injured, it's generally not a great idea to sell another one. I don't see how that's a controversial statement.

It isn't like we'll need Bailly in case we get loads of injuries. He's literally one of our only two fit centre backs right now.

By all means sell Martial, Lingard and DVB, we don't need them. We do need 4 PL quality CBs. That's not being overly cautious.

Sell him in the summer when Tuanzebe is back.

From what I’ve read, he’s not asked to play the holding midfielder role for Brazil. He’s got a proper CDM beside him (Casemiro) and thrives in the role.

Fred is not a defensive midfielder, despite how hard Ole tries to force him into that position. McT as well.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,080 ✭✭✭✭Zeek12

Yup that's pretty much it. And Brazil have Fabinho too, so they have very good options in the DM position.

Fred plays more of a box-to-box role in the International games I've seen.

So Newcastle are planning to challenge for the league by buying a bunch of players rejected from a United side that hasn't managed to mount a league challenge either? Do you think they might poach Ole too?

    City didn’t start challenging instantly.

the reality is they’ll need to build up to that over a few years. They have money but absolutely no respect yet. A Haaland or Mbappe won’t head there yet. So they’ll be looking for higher profile players than they’d usually get, and all of our “rejects” would massively improve them. Turn themselves over a summer from relegation candidates into an ultra solid upper mid table team. Then move after the bigger players.

    fred amazing for Brazil

    Pogba amazing for France

    Mctominay amazing for Scotland

but all skunks when playing for Utd…..

    what’s going on ???

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,002 ✭✭✭beno619

Well only one of them could be described as skunk when they turn up for United.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,625 ✭✭✭✭StringerBell

Yeah and he's formed a very good partnership with Fabinho at times too for Brazil. He isn't a DM and he never will be but if you play him with a proper defensive midfielder he thrives. Still can't shoot for **** but brings plenty to the table.

Hope this is true and that the club will do something about it. Our coaching staff needs serious improvement . We’ve got some of the best players in the world being coached by amateurs

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,080 ✭✭✭✭Zeek12

Completely agree. This imo is probably the biggest issue at United. Ole's game management obviously needs to be much better. But if the direction is not there on the training ground to begin with - we'll never compete. Carrick and McKenna should be cutting their senior coaching teeth in the Championship. Not at one of the biggest clubs in the world.

The coaching duo lack the experience to coach big name players. I'm surprised it took so long for the higher ups to recognise it.

I've said it a lot but it again highlights why having a manager or ole stature and experience is, was a bad idea.

Most managers have their team they bring with them and no what a good coach is.

Ole just had himself and by the looks of it doesn't know what good coaches are.

Varane out for a 'few weeks' with a groin injury.

i dont think you need much experience, you just need to be a good coach.

Maguire and Shaw much better for England than United.

    Pogba with France

    Fred with Brazil

    McTominay with Scotland

All playing better for their country than their Club who they train with day in day out.

Lack of coaching experience at the top level with United and a certain amount of square pegs in round holes.

    Seems to be acceptable though.

I think in our case you just need to be a coach.

The statement reads: "Raphael Varane sustained a groin muscle injury in the UEFA Nations League final and has commenced rehabilitation at the club.

“He will be out for a few weeks."

(so, that’s the excuses sorted then…)

Pogba isn't disciplined enough as a midfielder unfortunately, the issue of playing him and Fred needs to be addressed. We're doing nothing until.this is rectified

Ronaldo has scored two goals already for Portugal - two penalties. One in the 8th minute and the 13th minute. Luke Shaw has started well for England.

Bruno got a goal now. What a start for Portugal.

Phil Jones might get a run!Bailly and Lindelof will have to step up!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,231 ✭✭✭TRC10

Absolutely no excuses, we still have £150m worth of centre backs.

We should still be beating both Leicester and Atalanta no problem.

Ole may have gotten away with a draw at Leicester if he didn't have to make up for taking 1 point from 6 against Villa and Everton at home.

I've recently seen a clip of two Brazil players exchanging outrageous backheel passes in the Copa America semi final against Peru, with Fred attempting to get in on the action with a third backheel which predictably gave the ball to the opposition. From a social media exchange I've seen, Brazil fans think Fred is inexplicably selected for their international team because he plays for Manchester United, so he must be good. This is ironic because Manchester United fans are told Fred is inexplicably selected for their club team because he plays for Brazil, so he must be good.

I think Newcastle United are going to massively show up the Glazer propaganda of multi-year "projects". Man City were taken over in Sept 2008. They finished 10th, 5th and 3rd in the next 3 seasons. May 2012 they won the Premier League - a little over 3 and half years to go from midtable/relegation to a footballing superpower. It goes to show what money, expertise and desire can achieve in a relatively short period of time. The likelihood is Newcastle United will go from relegation candidates to seriously challenging for the Premier League in just three seasons. Meanwhile, United is still talking about long term ambitions and projects.

United's performance in the last 8 seasons demonstrates what incompetence and complacency can deliver, regardless of money or starting position. The grim reality is Newcastle United could be closer to a serious title challenge than Man United is.
