I think it's reflective of just how thin we our at 10, that we're desperate to anoint anyone as the heir apparent to Sexton.

Healy was excellent today. Some of his passing was just glorious. The one of Nash's try. And he had one early in the 2nd half. We know how good his boot is both off the tee and from hand. He's also one of the biggest 10s in world rugby at 6'3 and 15st.

He's definitely a lot more robust than H.Byrne which is a massive feather in Healy's cap. Hopefully he stats v Connacht next week and builds on today's performance.

Well that was a pleasant surprise. The frontline players got a rest week and we picked up a TBP on the road

Cloete was an absolute menace at the breakdown, I've been critical of him in the last 2 seasons and thought he was fortunate to have a contract

But if he performs anything like that on a semi regular basis then he could well be in the starting 15.

Cannot believe how bad the Scarlets were, a team full of Internationals and even a few Lions.

Their only try came from a very fortunate bounce

I did say the best of the pack behind Sexton, he mightn't have Joey's flair but he takes some hits and keeps going, has a mighty boot on him from the tee and open play, defends well which unfortunately Joey doesn't do and is full of confidence, if he was playing in NZ he'd be starting.

If the ref deemed it a penalty then he should have followed through and carded him.

I'm thrilled to be so wrong with my thoughts on how this game would go when the teams were announced. There really wasn't much bad about our game today bar a few penalties that kept Scarlets in the game until the 2nd half. The refs inconsistency in reffing high tackles and not rolling away at rucks didn't help us. A better team could have punished us more.

The only real downer today was RGS going off with another injury and news from the camp is worrying.

Carberys future might be on the bench as an option at 15 that can cover 10 for Ireland and as a Paul Warwick type for Munster when the main man is away.

I think Healy will get better and better, he has all the skills. Those long passes can unlock a defence, but they could also get picked off so his decision making is key and that comes from gametime.

I would have him ahead of carbery on thr basis of this season so far.

The ref and the TMO did not appear to get along to put it mildly. But yeah, once that was a penalty it was at least a card and frankly probably a PT.

    Nope.

I agree that the TMO and Ref didn't agree on several things but in that incident they agreed that there was plenty of cover, so a penalty try was never a consideration.

Leinster game was the same. We've lost a LOT of posters with the interface change.

Oddly I think most are still around just not posting as much.

Slightly different note, is there any way of muting the RTE commentators? They seem to find it necessary to tell us everything bar what the players had for their breakfast and I can't hear the ref over them!

I wouldn't worry, the ref talked utter shyte for most of it as well.

How much of Munster's budget is Rudolph Glassjaw Snyman actually taking up? Because its getting a bit beyond a joke at this stage.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,852 ✭✭✭✭Red Silurian

Gerhardus, not Glassjaw - I'd hope that Munster would have insurance taken out against players injuries so he wouldn't have cost us much so far

I think the Welsh International Scarlets players will feel quite embarrassed having been spanked like that at home by such a young Munster side.

The Munster players that stood out the most out of a lot of good showings for me were Nash, Coombes, Barron and Ahern. Lots of others were good too but these young guys came of age today in my eyes, the future is bright.

Munster are fast approaching what Leinster have had for a while, the ability to put out an inexperienced side with a few leaders and still put in a marvellous performance.

It heaps the focus onto the first string side now to live up to their reputation next week or their jersey could be under threat.

Two solid 15’s available (and a few more that could come into the reckoning if they get some game time) if we want to go the route of the French sides and play the big names at home and second string away:

    e.g.

    1 Kilcoyne - Loughman

    2 Scannell - O’Byrne/Barron

    3 Ryan - Archer/Knox

    4 Beirne - Wycherley

    5 Snyman- Kleyn/Ahern

    6 O’Mahony - O’Donoghue

    7 Cloete - Hodnett/Daly

    8 Coombes - O’Sullivan/Kendellen

    9 Murray/Casey - Cronin

    10 Carbery - Healy

    11 Zebo - Daly

    12 De Allende - Goggin/Scannell

    13 Farrell - Coombes

    14 Earls - Conway/Nash

    15 Haley - Gallagher

I reckon that B team would win a few away, and I’d expect that A team to win the majority at home. We’d be guaranteed a playoff place like that at least, but I doubt Van Graan would do this often, more once in a block of games when there’d be a short turnaround before an important home game, in this case the increased capacity for an interprovincial match is the perfect case to do it.

Superb stuff today, a better performance and result than we could’ve expected with some lads really putting their hands up.

Calvin Nash was my MOTM, a real statement game from him. He had a try, an assist and a try-saving tackle in the first half (albeit called back for the knock-on) when the game was still in the balance. That finish in the 2nd half as well was class. We’re stacked on the wing.

Cloete with so many turnovers. It provides a brilliant attacking platform against unstructured defence. If he can bring that level again, he’s a legit option as our starting 7. Seemed to be tasked with more carrying as well.

Ben Healy with a great showing, he’s got a huge boot but he’s got that brilliant lofted, skip pass in his locker as well, saw it a few times last season too. Interesting to see the 10 selection next week now, that was better than what we’ve seen from Carbery this season.

Scarlets were dire defending around the rucks, but good to see us capitalise on it.

Probably Neil Cronin and Barron’s best games for Munster. Ahern, Fineen and JOS as well with very tidy showings, I thought.

The obvious negative was Snyman. It sounds serious again. You’d feel for him.

And we still definitely have an issue on receiving kick-offs / re-starts. It showed up towards the end of last season and still doesn’t look solved.

The only other downside I could think of is that JOD (assuming the Billy Holland mantle as captain with that kind of starting 15) might be a touch too grouchy for the captains role at times.

But all things considered, that was class.

Afaik his wages are covered by external backers but in any event there would usually be insurance in place.

Eitherway, that's a really crap comment to make about any professional player.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 45,433 ✭✭✭✭thomond2006

You're a pleasant one. How dare a professional player's injury record cause you annoyance.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,882 ✭✭✭RichieRich_89

Good win for Munster. Hard to believe on the basis of that scoreline that Scarlets were league champions as recently as 2017 and that Munster haven't won a trophy in more than a decade.

Healy putting himself in the frame for the international squad for the Autumn Tests? I suppose it'll probably depend on whether he's actually preferred to Carbery at stand off when the first choice XXIII gets selected.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,828 ✭✭✭Tigerandahalf

It is good to see Healy playing well today as Carberry's form has been very worrying. I think the Munster game plan is much more suited to Healy's strengths.

Hard to write too much into today's performance. If they can produce it on another few occasions you could be more confident.

There does though seem to be a good group of young players for the first time in a long time. Rugby has needed a strong Munster team competing at the very top.

id agree at times can be a bit volatile but thought he handled today’s ref superbly, he was respectful when asking for the Knock on by Owens to be looked at before the non try and a few times heard him talking well to the ref.

Pretty miserable comment, as if he decided to get up yesterday morning and sustain a significant injury. WTF is wrong with you?

    Fúck. Another cruciate rupture confirmed.

Didn't look good at the time but still that's some kick in the teeth for him more than anyone. Hope he gets back soon.

So that's him done for the season and likely his munster career right

    Rotten luck, Poor guy

Very sad. Gutted for him. Reminds me of Coetzee coming into Ulster and suffering two big injuries before he could get his Ulster career going. RG need look no further than his countryman for his inspiration. I am sure he will speak to Marcel. Get well soon RG.

    Very disappointing for him.

He might feel he owes Munster a season and sign on for another year. He's still young, only 26, still plenty of runway left on his career.

That's awful, all the best to him in his recovery. Totally innocuous incident last year in a lineout looks to cost him at least 2 years of his career. Brutal for the guy.
