Spotify is a tenner a month, less then the price of buying a new release CD... for that you can listen to everything and anything, in just a click or two...sound is good, huge selection, you can make playlists, listen to bonus tracks, not have to bother trudging into town to buy an album you think you might like or getting it on amazon ... that album in reality only has four good tracks.... but you can go all in on Spotify...everything.

It's missing a small number of tracks which can be annoying, it doesn't work well with mixes, clunky interface, streaming is bad for the environment, it's discovery functionality is not as good as Deezer, unfair distribution of royalties.

It's a pretty good service, but not worth a tenner a month.

Buying sunscreen, or anything you can find cheaper in a supermarket, from a pharmacy.

  • Registered Users Posts: 24,931 ✭✭✭✭Strumms

Well, It’s certainly worth a tenner a month the usage I give it. :) about 3 euros a day...

I find it quite user friendly though, I wouldn’t imagine Spotify damages the environment more then the physical product of hardcopy physical music, an absolute mass of plastic...

Streaming generates more co² than playing a downloaded track. Depending on the number of times you listen to a track, this can be greater than the co² generated in the manufacture of a CD.

A minute of youtube takes circa 1 AA battery's worth of power to watch.

First they came for the socialists...

    Watches.

This from someone who owns a Tag Heuer for everyday wear and an Omega Seamaster for special occasions.

Amazed that there hasn't been a blazing row for Apple v Android yet, even though its been mentioned a few times. Its normally like the Saipan of these threads.

I just don't get cruises, even though I've never been on one. Cost a fortune and stuck on a cramped boat for most of it. Nothing to do except sit around by a pool all day and listen to some cr@p lounge singer in the evening. Get off at certain locations for a few hours where I'm sure you're just herded into overpriced tourist shops/ areas. I'd make an exception for something like an Alaskan cruise where you are seeing some spectacular scenery at least.

I would never spend big money on Sunglasses. They generally get lost, broken or scratched. €20 max

Agreed. I spent big money once or twice on Oakleys. Absolute waste of cash. They lasted a couple of years and had to be replaced.

Yes I was referring to absolute differences not relative difference. Neither is incorrect to do of course - but as with most statistics you can make the same thing sound massively difference. For example one news article might say that eating a lot of bacon increases your life time risk of catching some cancer from .001% to .003% which means that you probably do not have to worry about eating much bacon at all. Another article might say "Eating bacon increases your risk 300%!!!".

Neither article is lying. One is clearly going for the click bait more than others.

But sun screen usage comes a lot into it too. And that is not included in either statistic as well as it could be. Many people do not really use it correctly. Which is why I also said that applying the much cheaper much lower factor correctly and repeatedly is going to do a lot more for you than slapping on the highest factor once and badly.

€25 per year if you join a family plan. I'd just laugh at someone if they tried to tell me that €2.08 per month for access to any song I could imagine is a waste of money.

I subscribe. I would watch easily 2-3hrs if not more a day, be it entertainment, music, tutorials etc.

Ads were getting annoying, I prefer not to use a ad blocker as ads are income for the people I watch, so I subscribe.

I would watch more youtube than Tv or netflix which most people pay for with little issue.

I don't mind paying for a service that I get a lot of value from.

The numbers nerd in me can't help but point out that one of those articles would be lying.

The percentage increase would be only 200, not 300.

However, a different article that says "eating bacon trebles your chances of catching cancer" wouldn't be lying.

Hah well caught - my bad. I should have either said 200% or added the word "to". But I think the point is clear enough? Two readings of the exact same statistic can sound entirely different but both be entirely correct.

    Keeping with the audio theme…

    dab radio.

terrible compressed quality compared to fm, limited availability and high power consumption compared to regular radio ( you wouldn't run one on batteries)

Oh, I fully agree with you that certain stats can be interpreted and then portrayed any way you like, to suit your own agenda.

And at least you understand why the increase is 200% rather than 300%. Numbers nerd here is blue in the face from trying to explain things like that in the past to other people...so much so that I normally don't bother any more, unless it's for work purposes or something else important.

And yes, I really am fun at parties. 😁

Anything apple, its so grossly overpriced. The people falling over themselves every 12 months to trade in there previous model for the new one with an upgraded camera and double storage they will never use make me laugh. I've been buying Xiaomi phones for 200-300 for years and there isnt anything they can't do, I could probably make do with cheaper models too.

The Lidl middle aisle is my absolute weakness, I know I shouldn't but I can't resist coming home with another drill, kitchen gadget. Most will never be used.

Onlyfans - there is unlimited free and better content online. Are you that pathetic that you need some woman to pretend to like you and message you so she can extort you?

I can deffo see how it can be worth it for most people. For me personally, it'll never beat buying a physical record. I've been collecting records for over 25 years. Still have virtually every record I've ever bought. (A tiny fraction have gone missing at gigs or been traded)

If I were to spend a 10er a month, 120 Euro a year. That's money I'll never see again. If I used that money to buy records I'd still have the records at the end of that year and many more to come. When I started out records were dying. They've come back in a very big way and if I were to sell I'd make decent coin. No that I plan on selling it all, but may need to trim the fat at some stage.

Hah no worries. I am probably just as anal and pedantic as you when it comes to numbers - when the numbers actually matter. With my post above the exact % was not really that important to make the point I was making. The typo did not take away from my point. So at moments like that I do tend to be less concentrated and I slip up. Well done for spotting it :)

So yea - imagine the party we would throw together :)
