How to reset ipad first gen?

A family member has a first generation ipad that has sat in a wardrobe for years probably at this point as she forgot the passcode to it. She also doesn't remember what email she associated with it and don't even think about asking for what the apple id was. How does one go about getting this thing up and usable again…

How does one go about getting this thing up and usable again without jail breaking it? Is contacting apple any good considering the paucity of information that can be provided?

Connect it to iTunes and set it up as a new iPad.

Very little will run in it these days. No internet browser or youtube or any app store apps as far as i know.
if you can source some older .ipa files I think you can just drop them into the itunes app folder in the harddrive and they appear as options to install next sync.
