It's going to be squeaky bum time over the next few weeks. Perez finished top 15 today so he'll get some points. Rose showing some form finally so the pressure for wildcard picks to go to Garcia, Poulter and Rose.

Lowry really needs to pick up some points. Next week is huge. Needs a good week and to go to the BMW. Looks like he'll be around 66 or so going into next week. If he makes it to East Lake he should be fine for ranking points I would think.

I don’t think Perez is going to be a factor. The 2.115 points he picked up yesterday are the first world ranking points he’s earned since the World Matchplay back in March. This translates to 4.23 points in the Ryder Cup World Points list and leaves him 23.29 points behind Shane. Having said that, the fields for the upcoming European Tour events are not that strong and a win by Perez or Wiesberger would put the cat among the pigeons.

Justin Rose missed a short par putt on the 18th yesterday and this cost him a place in the playoffs, finishing just one place outside the top 125. This is going to make it difficult for him to earn enough points to qualify automatically, although I guess he could enter some of the upcoming European Tour events if he wants to make the team badly enough. And the final ranking event has a lot of World Ranking points at stake (64 for the winner), so a win there would certainly be enough to qualify any of the players currently on the fringes on the team.

The key issue is that Shane won’t make the team (as a pick or otherwise) unless he plays well and picks up a decent number of points over the next four weeks. Doing well enough next week to make the top 70 is very important as otherwise he is likely to end up needing a high finish in the BMW PGA Championship.

fair play to him on Sunday, stopped and chatted to loads of kids and parents after the match. No problem getting pics etc. either.

Well they snubbed Luke Donald a few years back and picked someone way lower in the rankings.

Let's all hope Shane qualifies, by definition if he's playing good enough he should qualify and P should pretty much go with the next 3 in qualification table.

When (Monty or Faldo) didn't pick Clarke a few RC back the US thought it was an unbelievable decision (which it was) and gave them a huge boost.

Rose's decent performance at the weekend certainly wont have helped Shane if he needs a pick.Would it be correct to say currently the biggest danger to Shane is Hovland getting knocked off European list and replacing Shane on the World list.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 20,636 ✭✭✭✭Rikand

Hovland isnt on the European Points list. He's currnetly outside the top 10 on the european list, so he has no effect on Lowry at all. He's 3rd on the World List and unlikely to lose his position from that list.

The world list is pretty much in his own hands. Have a good week at the Northern Trust this week where the ranking points are very decent and he'll be more or less home and hosed. 5 of the 7 people that are behind him on the world points list are not eligible to play at the Northern Trust (Perez, Mcintyre, Migliozzi, Wiesberger, Rose) and the other two are Poulter and Garcia who are guaranteed picks anyway.

Therefore, those 5 should they want to qualify automatically will have to rely on the European Tour for the next 3 weeks where the world ranking points are much lower and really only a top 3 make any significant movement

As regards the european points list, Wiesberger, McIntyre, Migliozzi and Perez are the biggest threats, but they basically need to win one of the next tournaments to overtake Rory on the european points list and neither of the 4 are playing in the D+D Czech masters which is on this week.

A good week this week more or less seals the deal for Lowry

Rose finished outside the Top 125 in the Fedex Rankings. That tells you all you need to know about his form.

Agree. His recent form has been poor and I would hate to see him get a pick.

I think Shane will qualify comfortably on merit. If he somehow doesn't qualify it would be very hard to justify him getting a pick, as Ryder Cup experience and matchplay pedigree usually win the day.

First hole at the Northern Trust for Lowry today. Double bogey including a missed 4 and a half footer. 3rd hole, 3 putting from 30 feet including a missed putt from slightly less than 4 ft. Lowry will be a liability if he makes the Europe Ryder cup team. Short putting will be a car crash for the pride of Offaly. And knowing the Yankee fans, they will let him know and give him plenty of stick that will unsettle Shane. Sorry if I’m being harsh but that’s the way I feel.

Yeah Lowry is one of the worst putters on the PGA Tour according to the stats, hence why he not in as many contending positions as often as he should be , no matter how well he is playing with the rest of his game. When he is playing well and has a good putting week, he is hard to beat. He is 190th out of 206 PGA tour professionals for 3 putt avoidance in 2021. I reckon Shane will be a great asset to Ryder cup though, he relishes being in the heat of battle and has the temperment to thrive

Shane is not playing well enough to be on the Ryder Cup team. When is he going to do something about his putting, awful again today ?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,512 ✭✭✭dublin49

battled back to level par, think he will go better tomorrow, double on the first would rattle most.

He needs a good day tomorrow and over the weekend. Projected standings have him dropping 5 places to 71st. Will miss the BMW qualification based on that.

Shane will make the team no matter what. He'd prefer to make it auto but I think he is a cert for a pick. He'll probably play fourball's

I was wondering his start yesterday was he regretting his journey back from a golfing prep perspective.

Mission 1 is to make the cut.

If he makes it next week he will lose his points for open win would be 6.5 after next week.

Ten foot putt on his first hole today for a birdie, hopefully get a bit of momentum going.

28 foot putt for a birdie on his second hole

The Ryder Cup standings say otherwise but don't let that get in the way of your ongoing narrative towards him.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,314 ✭✭✭The Big Easy

Putter is hot today so far anyway, 3 under through 5, having made putts of 10, 28, and 7 foot for birdie and an 8 footer for par for good measure.

Can't understand why Shane has so many detractors on an Irish discussion board, but hey ho, each to their own.

Who knows, maybe he can win the FedEx Cup?!

That's a collection of putts that could make him feel invisible on the greens today. Hopefully a mid 60s round is on the cards.

Great turnaround today so far, hope he can build consistency from this.

Serious brainfart on the par 5 if shot tracker is to be believed

  • Subscribers Posts: 43,262 ✭✭✭✭sydthebeat

    Second easiest hole too.

Seems to have been two bad shots with his second and third.... Anyone watching what happened?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,337 ✭✭✭TheRiverman

Birdie on 17 to bring him back to 4 under. Much better today and great to see 😊

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,872 ✭✭✭abff

A few good putts holed today and a couple of short ones missed. First objective of making the cut has been achieved. Top 30 will probably be good enough to get him through to next week, but it would be nice to see him push on and get a top ten finish.

MacIntyre is playing the korn ferry this week so his priority is getting a PGA card. Second highest ranked player in the field but points are less than Czech masters, 1 shot outside the predicted cut with 3 holes left.

May need a big BMW when he returns which would be playing 9 weeks out of 10 if he plays the 3 Korn Ferry events.

Am I correct in saying the danger to Lowry now is not on the world list ,its Rory getting bumped off the European list and replacing Lowry on the World list,in which case anything he does now is academic short of over taking Westwood on the World list which is unlikely given the points difference between them.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,938 ✭✭✭PokeHerKing

Eagle for Shane, -4 on his round through 7. Some really low scores out there today, be great if he was one of them.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,337 ✭✭✭TheRiverman

Wonderful round so far today -5 after 8. Keep it going Shane 🔥

Incredible round, 9 under for the day and -13 in the clubhouse!

Can we all just quit with this nonsense that he might not be worthy of a Ryder Cup pick, if by some quirk he doesn't qualify automatically please?
