People stuck at home bored during the pandemic has only made it worse. You could say there's an epidemic of attention seeking.

Hopefully it'll go the way of Bebo when the novelty wears off.

Probably in the past 2 years. It's definitely a generational thing. I'm late 20s and I don't get it. It appeals to people who have no comprehension of what dial-up internet is nor looks like. People who grew up with Instagram and who get their dopamine hit from the amount of likes/views they get.

‘Likes hunters’ aka attention seekers are a fuckin weird breed.

My seven year old niece had to take a trip to A&E last Christmas Eve where she fell off the bed, so distracted was she with recording a Tik Tok. Seven. Luckily no fracture but still like. Seven.

teens used to form pop ,rock group,s ,now they make music on laptop,s , tik tok is even easier ,take any piece of music ,dance to it,or do something stupid or slightly funny .why is a 7 year old using a smartphone, never mind making tik toks ? it takes a certain am amount of tech savvy to make youtube video,s , tik tok makes it easy to have 60 second video. when mtv was invented some people used to say it shows people have a short attention span, eg watch 3 minute video,s . on page one tiktok website i see irish video you mad c..t , the c word, is there no moderation on tik tok, don,t they even try to block bad language in the title of the video. i think tik tok is supposed to have a age limit ,how is a 7 year setting up a tik tok account.

tik tok has licensed all the hit pop songs, from the music ip holders, basically you can any use music on tik tok without getting a dmca notice to remove it , use a few seconds of music on youtube without permission and you,ll get a dmca notice or they ,ll take your ad revenue .

the app has built in audio and video editing functions, youtube has no basic video editing functions .tik toks are usually 60 seconds long.

There are even TikTok houses now.

"TikTok houses are literal houses (often mansions) where primarily Gen-Z TikTok influencers live together and create videos for the social media platform."

There is a theory lead pipes lead to the downfall of the Roman empire. Long term exposure to lead can affect the development of a child's brain leading to problems with learning, behaviour and attention.

It's going to reduce young people's attention spans to a matter of seconds.

It'll slide out of popularity with teens soon enough as more and more over 20s pile on.

Tiktok is used by 60 per cent of americans under the age of 30, yes it has a lot of dancing video,s , any song that goes viral on tik tok is likely to be a hit .

every generation has its own form of media that it favors,

old people used to say whats the point of rock and roll , comicbooks , the beatles , jazz music. i think its cool that young people are dancing to old songs from the 70,s ,80,s , 90s . it real talent to dance to a song for 2 minutes and get millions of views .

theres alot of political content on tik tok, pro minority and lgbt content. i see no harm in it ,maybe the next lady gaga or madonna will get started on tik tok.

i think its ridiculous to say tik tok is some scheme to spread pro china political content to young people ,

its based on an older app that had a 2 minute time limit ,but it lhas a deal with record companys so you can use any song or piece of music without getting a dmca takedown notice .

and it has very easy to use editing features built in .

The world can easily live without TikTok.

These videos are probably only some kind of trap to collect whatever user dater and evaluate this data for whatever reason.....

tik tok is very cleverly designed it shows you videos based on what you clicked on previously ,it has millions of users ,the more users an app has makes a difference , it will show you more quality content ,its easy to use .meta and youtube are copying the format with short videos. shorts and reels .an app cannot get 1 billion users unless it has a wide range of quality content, its not just dancing videos. its got videos on many subjects ,politics, gaming, comedy .its not just a fad .they are trying to ban tik in the usa because its a chinese owned company, meanwhile anyone can buy user browsing data from people in the usa from data brokers .theres only basic privacy laws in the usa re user online data .

Gather data for marketing purposes and a platform for influencers to the same end. I don't have it and I never will. Complete waste of time.

I always thought imagine the chaos in the world TikTok or Facebook could create if they released everyone’s search history on those apps for one day!!

China could wreak havoc with the information it has on people.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 40,378 ✭✭✭✭Mellor

A search function exists, but people don't really search on either app.

Tiktok is algorithm based. If somebody wants to see videos of cats, they just need to scrolling and watch videos of cats, then they get more. Search results would likely be people looking for a specific trending video. Nothing embarrassing.
You boards post history would be more juicy.

People actual internet search history is where the skeletons are

Tik tok was based on vine but with the option to use music from sony.universal big music company's as a soundtrack. If a song is popular on tik tok it,ll be a hit.it notes what videos you watch and then it,ll show you more of the same . I hear gen z uses tik tok for news .

So people searching for other people on Facebook or looking up other people’s pictures etc?

Imagine all that history was released.
