For me it was the fact that there was no Irish in the starting 15. At the end of the day my interest in the lions is to see the Irish do well.

That and the Kilkenny v Wexford game was a bit of a cracker

The downside of the game tomorrow night is that it clashes with the Football. Would imagine my local will be showing it over the rugby.

It doesn't clash, they changed the KO time to 6pm.

The no irish in the XV was down to the fact that all 7 of our lads started the game before and he gives everyone a start in the 1st 3 games, so naturally the whole XV will change. So It didn't bother me at all.

Furlong, Murray and Henshaw are dead certs for the test team. With Henderson, Beirne, Conan and Aki being possibles. We'll be well represented.

Take Scotland for example. Even though they have the same numbers as us, Hogg and Watson are the only 2 players who have a chance of starting and they're possibles rather than probables.

It’s crazy in hindsight that it’s gone this far.. but life, and sport, goes on. So why shouldn’t this in the UK?
You have seen the COVID numbers in England in recent days, and the figures coming out regarding fans attending games in Scotland, yes?

Tour is rapidly drifting into farce territory and the covid situation in SA is clearly out of control.

I'd say the whole thing is in real jeopardy now.

For the life of me I can't understand why SA aren't in a secure bubble. It's absolutely nuts and has put the tour in jeopardy. The whole thing has been mismanaged from the start.

They are in a secure bubble. The question is how secure it actually is.

The Bulls were apparently doing a 5-day bubble. That's utterly pointless.

I was just thinking this. We only have 7 players on tour, imagine if all 7 made the first test team, that would be an incredible achievement. In 09 we had 6 players starting the first test iirc.

It also all suggests the start of the league could be a mess. A few months to sort it but if they can’t organise a bigger thing right then I wouldn’t be optimistic on the smaller thing.

B&I Lions Vs The Bulls is off.

Can't see how this tour goes ahead tbh. Neither team will be remotely prepared.

Money guarantees that the tour will continue. Word is that the Bulls game will be rescheduled. There were only supposed to be two midweek games so midweek before or after the first test are free.

I thought they are only entering it on the 10th?

Preparedness is not going to be a factor in whether the series goes ahead.

I'd say the tour video is going to be pretty grim. No interactions with locals, probably just lots of sitting around hotels with the odd inspiring speech thrown in

Looking forward to the clips of the lads playing Scrabble in the team room. Bit of Monopoly on the go too maybe if we're lucky.

Bit old school there - Fortnite on XBox with each of them isolating in separate bedrooms.

Outside of the matches the tour video will be Zoom meeting recordings...

No way the Boks are vaccinated with those numbers.

Tour is completely spoiled. Players must be absolutely sickened, a lot of them potentially on their one and only/last tour and this happens.

This practical inevitability was foreseen by several posters here.

A plane should be despatched to South Africa at the earliest opportunity to pick up the B&I players and end this absolute mess and dismiss the Springbok squad before someone gets seriously ill.

The commercial imperatives behind this tour commencing at all need serious examination by the collective Unions on these islands. The relevant executives need to account for themselves.

I’m inclined to agree, I thought when the rainbow cup was a mess that they should have just said then that they were postponing it a year giving plenty of time to sort out all the issues.
    This is a mess.

To be fair Covid has barely been mentioned in the news

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,186 ✭✭✭Cosmo Kramer

It's not a problem. Pro sport has been ongoing for the last year with players testing positive. The SA squad is fully vaccinated. Therefore any positive players are highly unlikely to cause a super spreader event amongst the squad.

A day is a long time in the Covid infected world. This viewpoint has not aged well. :)

If they were fully vaccinated it doesn't say much about the ability of the vaccines to prevent transmission from whatever variant they have going around there (Delta?). Hopefully they are vaccinated though as that should still minimise the risk of serious illness.

Does it matter if young fit sportsmen have Covid? It’s a problem for senior citizens.

Most likely not. BUT.... There's still a small chance they could end up fairly sick and suffer long covid. And that's not including all of the support staff that's involved in running a tour like this, it's not as if it's just 30 odd young lads running the show completely isolated on their own.

It does if they are responsible for spreading the virus to those not vaccinated
