Summary of my team from previous post:
    abV34Q2aP.png

    My Attack

I believe this is the strongest part of my team. My first pick was Kylian Mbappe, one of the most sought after forwards in the sport, and I wanted him to lead a line that was all about pace and firepower. Alongside him, I was able to draft Thierry Henry in the legends round, one of the all-time great attacking players and someone Mbappe has been compared to in terms of style. My final pick for my attack was to acquire Erling Haaland in the non Euros players round. Haaland as we know is a goal machine and playing alongside Mbappe and Henry he will be a menace to defences on the break.

    My Midfield

My central trio are big game players that have all won league titles. Joshua Kimmich has also won a Champions League, while Phil Foden and Koke have featured in CL finals. The role of my midfield three is straightforward: to complement the defence, and find the passes to unlock space for my front three in behind. Foden will have the most attacking license of the three, and there is tactical flexibility to shift to a 4-2-3-1 when the situation allows, letting him have more freedom near the edge of the box.

    My Defence

A strong back line is important and I believe my defence will prove a tough nut to crack. I have 3/4 of the French backline, including Presnel Kimpembe's club partner at PSG, and one of the best CBs in the world, Marquinhos, who I picked up in the non-UEFA round. In the FB slots, I have Lucas Hernandez and Benjamin Pavard, two players that won the World Cup and have won numerous accolades at club level. I don't think this backline will be easy to break down, and the FBs will be able to contribute well in attack.

    My Goalkeeper

In Thibaut Courtois, I have a goalkeeper that has won titles at every club he's every been with. One of the world's best number ones and someone that will be a strong last line of defence.

    My opponent's team:

    Best of luck to Slick.

I see this as being a close game decided by small margins and I feel it's in the wide areas that my team gets the win.

I like the De Ligt and Silva combo but I see vulnerabilities in the wide areas. Tierney is a player I rate but up against Mbappe I think he will struggle. Likewise Alexander-Arnold is going to find it tough going against Thierry Henry marauding down that left channel.

In midfield, I think it's a close contest. I feel I should respond to some comments on my previous match thread that I should have switched Koke and Kimmich. Playing Koke as the pivot is modelled on Simeone utilising him there this season, usually with Lemar and Llorente flanking him in more advanced positions. The BBC have an article on it here and Sid Lowe talks about it here:

    https://twitter.com/sidlowe/status/1369931651980140545

Kimmich could play as the deeper player of course, but I liked him on the right so that he could link up with his Bayern teammate Pavard, and fill in as a makeshift RB on occasions when Pavard is more forward. I think it would be a great asset to have them both on the right side of the park. I hope that explains my thought process.

My main objective would be to get my midfield pinging balls into the space behind his FB areas, as I don't see them getting a lot of cover with his midfield three having two attack-minded players in KDB and Bernardo. Busquets is great, but it's asking a lot of him to help stop my pacy forwards.

Defensively, I think my back four will prove resolute. Hernandez kept Sancho quiet earlier in the season when Bayern won 3-2 away at Dortmund. I think Pavard matches up well with Perisic. Van Basten of course worries any defence, but I believe my CBs can make life difficult. I also think I have comfortably the better goalkeeper, which could prove a difference maker in a tight contest.

In summary, I think Henry and Mbappe get too much joy in this one and I believe that decides the game, with something like a 2-1 scoreline. Thanks for reading and may the best team win.

    Overview

I think the great strength of my team is balance. From the CB partnership being able to do the dirty stuff, as well as play, to my full backs being able to defend and distribute, to my midfield having huge energy, with great quality in the final 3rd, to my attack, which boasts a striker an all-round game to rival any the world has ever seen, who can finish any chance, to my wing forwards who bring energy and end product - the team will be very difficult to handle.

The individual talent is there, but I believe that what you get will be even greater than the sum of it's parts.

    Leno

Not the top keeper in the draft, but is close to perfect for what I need. A shot stopper, who can distribute effectively. I have no qualms about him whatsoever, and can more than do the job.

    CB partnership

Big, strong, quick, and can play. There are better CB partnerships on paper, but what they can give me in terms of team structure, and having the experience to press high up the pitch to condense the pitch- its ideal.

    Full backs

Trent is the best attacking RB in Europe, and his stats prove his defence is among the best around in the Premier League. Dribbling, crossing, switching play - all in the locker.

Tierney is Andy Robertson light, and is arguably a better crosser. Solid as a rock, and brings more balance.

    Midfield

The strongest collective part of the team.

Busquets is as exquisite a reader of the game as there is at his peak, and will mop things up as my fullbacks push on.

Bernardo Silva has energy in bucketloads. His game has developed under Pep to the point that he's a major part of the midfield 3. He can keep the ball, can find a killer pass, and can harass and press. He and De Bruyne either side of Busquets is a dream.

De Bruyne is simply the best in the world not named Messi. He's also high energy, and now has Trent on his side to help with the creative load.

    Attack

Van Basten is as good as there's ever been. He can link play, dropping deep on occasion, can outpace you, and finish on the ground or in the air.

Either side of him are Perisic, who has provided width and penetration all his career … and Jadon Sancho, who has 40+ goal involvements in the last year. He can score, create and carry the ball.

I'm not convinced by some of the comments that the wide players might be a weak point. Swift, direct and creative.

    abV34Q2aP.png

This will be a tough game, needless to say.

I've said all along that my team is about balance. I'm the first to admit I don't have the big names of other teams, but we all know that's not how football necessarily works.

Essentially, like I have in other games, I believe my midfield gets on top. I believe it has the energy and ability to press and keep the ball for long periods. I don't trust Foden in there. Koke was a great pick at the stage he got him, but it's not enough IMO.

As others have said, I don't think the balance is quite right up front, and they could well get in each others way. It's frightening on paper, but maybe not so much in practice.

I think my structure will allow KDB to flourish and control. I see huge success on that side in conjunction with Trent, as long as Busquets can stay in control, and the others keep their energy up.

    May the best team win.

Whatever the result, it's been a pleasure to be part of this. Really well run. Thanks to all.

    Fairly straightforward for me.

I think Slick has the second best team in the draft.

    SlickRic
    Best keeper- MNG
    Best defence- MNG
    Best midfield-Slick
    Best attack-MNG

SlickRic's midfield would definitely control play but I think MNG's defence is good enough to keep Ric's attackers quiet. On the other hand, I don't see Ric's defence being anywhere near good enough to keep MNG's quiet.

    My vote is for MNG

Mr. Nice guy for me. Slick definitely dominates the midfield, but MNG has enough elsewhere to come through.

Really difficult choice, Defence is pretty even I feel with MNG having a better GK but prefer Ric's full backs. Up front MNG has a huge advantage but Ric has a much better midfield I think. MNG probably just has too much power up top so will edge it

Midfield is where it's won and Slick's edges it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 16,376 ✭✭✭✭event

Midfield is where games are won and lost. And I am not sure if MNG midfielders will even get a touch of the ball tbh.
I think a lot of people dont realise or remember how good MVB was. He will tear that CB partnership apart IMO.
And while MNG forward line is very good, they need to get the ball which I dont think they will do.

Slick to win it for me

Slick for me Midfield is too strong and would smother any opposition. His defense is mean enough looking too.

Probably wouldn’t be the prettiest contest but see a 1-0 team Slick.

    Best keeper- MNG
    Best defence- MNG
    Best midfield-Slick
    Best attack-MNG

Honestly I don't think MNGs defense is better. It would be used to each other and that is a big plus but like with France Deschamp likes picking players who are primarily CBs as WBs and although they are capable there I would probably pick Tierney and Trent ahead of them. De Ligt and Silva meanwhile I have equal to MNGs pairing.

In midfield however I am giving the edge to Slick like MNG above.

There may be question marks over how they would fit together but I have to give MNGs trio in attack the nod as being the better frontline. That said I would question how they might do with limited possession thanks to Slick edging the Mid & Defensive areas and for that reason overall I am going to give Slick a very slight win here.

Voted for MNG in all his other games and he might just win this one out anyway because I am sure they would get on the scoresheet and those forwards will probably sway most but I'll still go 2-1 to Slick

I think Slick has the better defence and a much better midfield, with a nice mix of width and creativity to get the ball up to my absolute favourite player as a kid.

I'm being consistent in thinking that the three names up front for MNG don't sway my thoughts too much, in fact they could be more of a hinderance than a help, which of those 3 are going to be dropping back to help a midfield that will be struggling to get the ball from Busquets and De Bruyne? Will he have 3 lads all waiting up front for a ball that doesn't come?

Its slick for me, I just can't make a case for MNG.

    SlickRic
On the Koke dm point it must be noted that he played as a dm in front of 3 centre backs not 2 like here.

This is really close. I like MNG Back 5, i like his midfield individually maybe not as a 3, maybe Foden could have been a someone more experienced i dont think Pep has trusted him as part of 3 man midfield in the big games so far or if he has hasn't delivered from my memory anyway. Henry Haaland Mbappe is scary good on paper but all 3 want to end up in same spaces.

Slick probably bosses the midfield but MNG scary quick on counter. Think Henry would get in behind TAA at least once or twice.
Perisic & Sancho dont score as many goals as Henry & Mbappe but I'd reckon they would be better at tracking back.
Very close but going with MNG 2-1

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,778 ✭✭✭Ferris_Bueller

I'm going with Slick here. Like some others have said above, there are too many imbalances in MNGs squad for me, three centre forwards, no real holding midfielder, wing backs who are arguably centre halves etc.

Slick has a very well balanced team in comparison and I think he would dominate the ball, I think his wingers are a slight weakness but still think he would be able to keep it solid at the back and create enough to win it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,837 ✭✭✭Hodors Appletart

    Slick for me.

I think his team is way more balanced and with van Basten up top its always going to get goals.

Defences are probably equal, but Slick has the best midfield.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 21,567 ✭✭✭✭martyos121

Two really excellent teams and it’s an interesting match up stylistically, but SlickRic just edges it for me with his outstanding midfield. MNG has a fearsome front line but I like Slick’s defence enough to fancy them to hold their own against it, while Slick’s attack is top class as well but up against a solid looking defence from MNG.

It really does come down to the midfield battle once again and I can’t see Koke, Kimmich and Foden being competitive in that area, let alone on top, against the likes of Busquets, KDB and Silva.

Slick for me here. The sum of all the parts are better.

MSG has better players in attack especially but I find it hard to shake off the feeling that the balance of the attack isn't right

    SlickRic
    MNG for me.

Although I like slicks team and it is well balanced i dont think perisic/Sancho come up with the goods often enough to win this one.

MNG is overall team is better and fairly well balanced aswell

Slick. Defence better, midfield will control the game. Then Van Basten up front. EZ GG

Congrats, Slick. I thought it would be a big ask winning this one. Lovely team you built. Delighted to have made the final with the quality of teams around.

    Thanks folks.

Should've probably been an even closer final if we're honest, but I appreciate the votes all the same!

    Superbly run too, well done.
