I suggest you broaden your experiences.

I think that's the first time I've heard that in going on a quarter of a century.

Having an interest in subduing does not mean wants to be that. Try harder.

Everything I don't like is either woke or fascist - possibly both - pick one.

What a load of nonsense. Most of us grew up watching British and American TV. Didn't make us any less Irish.

Subconsciously the proliferation of foreign television probably did and not just in Ireland but that's a different discussion.

We are not talking about The Office or Friends here. This station has firmly nailed a Union Jack to it's mast. We can all read between the lines what that means. If it makes it to November I can only imagine the spectacle that will be on offer. Any Irishman or woman championing that ****e should be ashamed of themselves.

What is your psychological explanation for my propensity to watch CNN or RTE News?

Some sort of subliminal self-hating wannabee Irish immigrant to the US?

I've just deleted 51 posts that have nothing to do with the actual topic of the thread - if you cannot discuss the topic then don't post here.

The "proliferation of foreign television"? You sound like de Valera in the '30s. Should we be spending our time listening to Raidió na Gaeltachta and reading Peig?
Any Irishman or woman championing that ****e should be ashamed of themselves.

Nonsense. Plenty of Irish people will see it as a welcome change from the monochromatic leftist perspective in their own country's journalism and media.

It's doesn't mean you'll be seeing Union Jacks fluttering from Irish rooftops in a few weeks' time.

These channels are usually good in a "if they're reporting it as well as all the other channels then the far right nuts have nothing else to fall back on".

Fox news was great for this during the last US election (lest we forget the "alternate" election maps from NewsMax and OANN :pac: )

There seems to be a great fuss about the mere existence of this channel. I think Brexit is a folly but don't see the problem with a channel catering for that demographic.

That said print media in the UK, unlike here, trends broadly right.

I do enjoy a post that says I had my struggles look at my orientation therefore I'm entitled to be an arshole about other people's rights.

.oh and you've heard it here tonight folks. The fight for rights is over done and dusted. Eskimo has made the proclamation. Now people are just muddling around in the dark looking for rights to get annoyed about.

There does come a time when rights are in fact achieved. The Chartists have disbanded.
I guess that's why Hungary Poland and Russia are rolling back gay rights left right and centre.

Most of those countries have had legalised homosexuality for much much longer than Ireland, or the UK, for instance. Poland since before the war. Hungary in 1961. The USSR varied. Not every country in the world has to be on board with everything the West does.

The US is now planting the rainbow flag outside the Vatican for instance. Your side won. Congrats. Your side is also now the establishment, and has the large imperial powers involved.

I'm confused. What side won what? How has that victory translated the ordinary man and how they live their lives?

As always, there are two main groups of people involved in this debate, liberals and authoritarians.

Liberals think a democratic society should be based on tolerance, and so we should welcome a plurality of views and robust debate. Catering to different ideological viewpoints helps create a healthier society, because most people feel they are represented.

Authoritarians believe their views are correct, and contrary opinions are wrong, bad, dangerous, or evil. They believe the only way to create a healthier society is to ensure everyone thinks like them -- and so believe we should censor, shut down, or cancel anything that doesn't reinforce their personal beliefs.

Sadly, genuine liberals seem to be a diminishing group in society, with authoritarianism (both left and right) on the rise.

Left authoritarians tend to be supportive of diverse demographics and identities, but rigidly opposed to diversity of ideas -- hence all the fuss over this new station.

Patrick Freyne's review in the IT is very funny.

"There are some dissenting voices on Wootton’s panel, but most of his guests are a who’s-who of trollkind. They include Allison Pearson, Rod Liddle, Claire Fox, Megyn Kelly, Laurence Fox, Lady Colin Campbell, Lord Voldemort, Scrooge McDuck, the millionaire from the cover of the Monopoly Box, Cruella DeVil, Megatron, Gargamel from the Smurfs and Nigel Farage. (Only the worst seven actually appear.)"

Interesting, do you know any Left authoritarians? Which country specifically has a left authoritarian government? Is there a left opinion 'news' station you can point to ?

Needs more fleshing out with facts...

I dont know what made me laugh more..... the inclusion of Scrooge McDuck or reading Rod Liddles name in Eamon Dunphys voice.

The pretty pathetic crowing over Ikea etc announcing pulling potential paying adverts is one for the Woke Thread to be honest - the thundering hypocrisy cannot be washed from any stable, logical persons eyes.
I think maybe people in the UK should stop funding 'Stop Funding Hate', it's clearly not fit for purpose when it conveniently forgets to target the same corporates for actual shítty and real world damaging behaviour.

It seems Ikea and a few other advertisers have done a U-turn, with Ikea acknowledging that it “is simply too soon to make an informed decision as to whether advertising there is in line with our advertising policy and brand guidelines”.

Ikea initially announced that it had “safeguards in place to prevent our advertising from appearing on platforms that are not in line with our humanistic values”.

Would this be the same Ikea who has just been fined €1 million and its former CEO given a suspended two-year sentence for hiring private detectives to spy on the private lives of its employees.

    https://www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-57482168
A French court has ordered Ikea to pay a fine of €1m (£860,000; $1.2m) after the Swedish furniture chain was found guilty of spying on staff in France.

Ikea France was accused of using private detectives and police officers to collect staff's private data.

This included illegally accessing their criminal records in order to vet applicants for jobs.

Ikea France was accused of using private detectives and police officers to collect staff's private data and review staff's bank account records.

The 15 people in the dock at the Versailles court included top executives and former store managers. Four police officers were also on trial for handing over confidential information.

AFP news agency reports former head of risk Jean-François Paris once wanted to know how an employee could afford a new BMW convertible, and asked why a staff member in Bordeaux had "suddenly become a protester".

The sheer hypocrisy of the virtue signallers is overpowering.

But here's what matters: the Right are winning - everywhere.

Conservatives in the UK, Marine Le Pen looking strong in France, the Italian elections showing strong Euroscepticism. Even Trump managed to score high during the last election.

Right-wing politics and support for the capitalist system and anti-woke values are on the rise.

    Leftism is in retreat, again.

In the UK, the Conservatives shattered Corbyn and are likely to retain power until the late 2020s.

Anti-wokery is on the rise. People may not speak it publicly for fear of retribution and abuse, but they privately speak against it.

Support for greater controls on migration are rising.

GB News is a reflection of this, and other, similar rises in right-wing politics.

So, whilst we can bicker here about the mechanics of the channel, there is a much broader conversation going on in the Western world. The Right is winning and on the march, and long may that continue as we quench extreme Leftism, cultural Marxism, and anti-Capitalist sentiment.

And that's why I'm very positive about the outlook, regardless of the communal, pat-on-the-back, collectivist opinion that we see here.

That's not really true though , or at least not in a meaningful way.

The current "Right" that you espouse will likely never hold power in any country that doesn't have a FPTP voting system.

The Tories got 56% of the seats leading to an 80 seat majority with a little over 40% of the total vote.

So UK voters don't want them by an almost 2:1 majority.

That isn't evidence of the "Right on the rise" , any victories are the results of deeply flawed, anti-democratic voting systems.

Just like the GOP in the US , gaining control in 2016 despite being unpopular across the majority of the country.

They might even win back the House and/or Senate in 2022 despite not being the most popular party by some margin.

Oh and by the way Marine LePen isn't a "Conservative" - She's a racist hate monger , but sadly maybe that's what Conservative means these days.

Being a "Conservative" used to mean something tangible - Small Government , Fiscal prudence with low taxes and self determination.

They were ideas that I could see some personal alignment with, albeit I'd be in favour of the existence of a strong social safety net etc.

Today though , "Conservatism" has been usurped by Hate filled racist misogynists' who's sole agenda seems to be "Get the other guy".

Not saying that you specifically or all Conservatives are that , but without question the over arching "movement" have been subsumed into this morass of awfulness.

Perhaps good , well intentioned Conservatives can eventually win out but the evidence right now isn't promising sadly.

So some French staff broke French law and this means IKEA as a whole is implicated?

If someone in your company breaks a law does that make you guilty by association?

It isn't actually the same IKEA. IKEA France got fined for spying on their employees. IKEA UK&Ireland were the ones that pulls their adverts from this station.
Sure they both answer to head office in Almhult but the decision wasn't made there.

Yes, I know plenty of them.

Ireland for decades was dominated by religious and conservative authoritarians who banned everything and canceled everyone who disagreed with them, in the interests of protecting their worldview. Even The Life of Brian was banned.

Now we have a new generation of so-called "progressive" authoritarians who are engaged in much the same tactics in service of their own ideology.

The progressive authoritarians react to the launch of GB News today in the same way conservative authoritarians would have reacted to the launch of the Playboy Channel in the 1980s. The dynamic is little different.

The effect is not the exact same. GB News can still run - it is up to them whether they can entice advertisers to bankroll the station. You couldn't show the Life of Brian in a cinema in Ireland at the time of the ban without being prosecuted.
