    Hi All,

I have a full drivers licence, but only for automatics. I need to do a driving test on a manual car in order to drive manuals, that's fine. I will apply for the manual test next week and I will do a few lessons to get to grips with the gears. My question is can I practice on my husband's manual car, while only having a full automatic licence, if my husband accompanies me? He has a full manual licence for 20 years and my comorehendive insurance covers me to drive other cars.
I looked up the rsa website and I cannot find an answer to my question.

    Cheers

    P. S. I have done the theory test and 12 lessons so I don't need to do those again.

You would need the learner permit for a manual licence and additionally have his insurance cover you on that licence.

I presume you have to follow the same rules as any other learner.

Are you sure it’s worth learning a manual at this stage? Within a couple of years all new cars will be automatic anyway.

You cannot generally drive a manual on an automatic licence.

Since you are a learner you just follow the same rules as any other learner (without a licence at all).

Thanks everyone, I will apply for a manual licence.

If he was clever he'd use it as an excuse to get a new car for himself :D
