Colin Firth to Play Michael Peterson in ‘The Staircase’ Limited Series for HBO Max

Colin Firth will play Michael Peterson in a series adaptation of “The Staircase,” which has been ordered to series at HBO Max.

HBO Max has ordered eight episodes of the limited series, which is based on the docuseries of the same name and various books and reports on the Peterson case. Peterson was accused of murdering his wife, Kathleen, in 2001. He claimed she died after falling down the stairs at their home, but police suspected he bludgeoned her to death and staged the scene to look like an accident. The docuseries was originally released in 2004, with creator Jean-Xavier de Lestrade updating with new information years later. Netflix released it as a 13-episode series in 2018.

Variety exclusively reported that the scripted series was in development back in 2019. “The Staircase” is written and executive produced by showrunners Antonio Campos and Maggie Cohn. Campos will also direct six of the eight episodes. The series is a co-production between HBO Max and Annapurna Television.

    Ordinary Joe
NBC has given a series order to Ordinary Joe, its drama pilot starring Jimmy Wolk from House veterans Russel Friend and Garrett Lerner and The Batman writer/director Matt Reeves and his 6th & Idaho banner. The project, which co-stars Natalie Martinez, Charlie Barnett and Elizabeth Lail, is a co-production of 20th Television, Universal Television, a division of Universal Studio Group, 6th & Idaho and 3 Arts.

Ordinary Joe, which had been a favorite of NBC brass since the pilot stage, is the last of the 2020 NBC crop of pilots awaiting a pickup decision. Last summer, the network committed to filming five pilots, dramas Langdon and Ordinary Joe and comedies American Auto, Night School and Grand Crew, while dramas La Brea and Debris were put on straight-to-series track. NBC subsequently gave straight-to-series orders to Debris and La Brea and picked up to series Ordinary Joe, American Auto and Grand Crew, while Langdon was ordered to series by streaming sibling Peacock.

Written by Friend and Lerner, Ordinary Joe explores the three parallel lives of the show’s main character (Wolk) after he makes a pivotal choice at a crossroads in his life. The series asks the question of how different life might look if you made your decision based on love, loyalty or passion.

    It is.

    It is.

It's an interesting idea, I would hope it would be a very loose remake because the history of the different countries could make for some interesting deviations.

Disney Plus’ ‘The Right Stuff’ Canceled After One Season

“The Right Stuff,” Nat Geo’s adaptation of Tom Wolfe’s 1979 nonfiction book of the same name, just didn’t have the, well, right stuff for Disney Plus. The series is not moving forward at the Disney streaming service, but Warner Bros. Television is looking for a new home for the Patrick J. Adams series, a source tells Variety.

According to separate person familiar with the matter, the cancellation was not tied to the show’s performance but a redesign of NatGeo’s strategic focus. Two versions of the show are currently being shopped around, one of which involves the current cast’s contracts being extended, but another that focuses on the 1980s and features a new cast.

While Disney Plus has found high-profile performers in Lucasfilm’s “The Mandalorian” and Marvel’s “WandaVision” and “The Falcon and the Winter Soldier,” other original series on the service outside of the Marvel and “Star Wars” families do not appear to have gained similar traction.

A documentary series spanning over two decades of footage and home videos of Kanye West’s life and work has landed at Netflix.

Billboard, which first reported the news, cites sources putting the price tag at Netflix at $30 million, though a person familiar with the matter tells Variety that that is not an accurate figure. The series is said to include never-before-seen footage of West, and will cover his career in music and fashion, his failed 2020 presidential bid, and the death of his mother, Donda West.

The multi-part docuseries, which does not yet have a title, hails from music video producing duo Clarence “Coodie” Simmons and Chike Ozah, better known as Coodie & Chike, who directed and produced West’s 2004 music video “Jesus Walks (Version 3)” and “Through the Wire.” The pair have also produced and directed the 2012 ESPN “30 for 30” documentary “Benji,” about Benjamin Wilson; music videos for Lupe Fiasco, Erykah Badu and others; and the 2019 documentary on former professional basketball player Stephon Marbury, “A Kid From Coney Island.”
