Teachers weren't just bashed today. They were shown up as selfish and deluded.

We have high rates of various conditions here. CF one of the world's highest, Haemochromatosis too (iron pills should be in prescription only here tbh), artery disease, some autoimmune diseases, alcoholism, etc.

Genuine question, has Kathryn RTE connections? How she gets on air is beyond me. I could say that for a lot of the staffers in fairness!

There seems to be no push for people to try lose a bit of weight and take vitamin d either, that would help a lot of people if they did get this thing.

This is utterly true. I've actually lost a lot of weight over the year for some reason, not deliberately trying, but I'm much fitter for it now.

That's great Cat, I put on a bit in the first lockdown so was terrified if I didn't do something I'd be in big trouble with the continuing lock downs. I have now lost two stone, back to normal weight, take vit d every day, get out walking and try exercise most days now. Weight seems to be a big factor in how you get on with Covid so just seems like a no brainer to encourage people to try get a little healthier if possible. It should be repeated like 'wash yisser hands'

    Disability stats in Ireland:
There were a total of 643,131 people who stated they had a disability in April 2016, accounting for 13.5 per cent of the population. This represented an increase of 47,796 persons (8%) on the 2011 figure of 595,335. In 2016, 311,580 (48.4%) persons with a disability were male while 331,551 (51.6%) were female.

Note: for the purpose of this report a disabled person has been classified as someone who responded 'yes' to any of the 7 categories in question 16 on long-lasting conditions or 'yes' to any of the four categories in question 17 on difficulties.

Figure 1.1 shows the number of disabled persons by age group alongside the percentage of the total population in that age group with a disability.

Up to one in ten persons below 45 years of age had a disability, rising to 20 per cent by age 60. Rates increase sharply above age 70, with 27.7 per cent of females aged 70-74 having a disability and 73.3 per cent of females over age 84 having a disability.

The rate of disability fell for all categories above age 45 compared with 2011. However, the increase in the number of older people means the actual number of people with a disability over 65 years has increased by 20,319 over the five years from 204,069 in 2011 to 224,388 in 2016.

Among those aged under 20, there was an increase of 11,828 persons with a disability (15.6%) since 2011, representing a disability rate of 6.7 per cent (up from 6% in 2011).

    p9d

    Sex ratio

Disability was more common amongst males in all age categories up to age 24, peaking in the 5-9 age groups where there were almost twice as many disabled boys (14,964) as girls (7,887).

Between the ages of 25 and 59, there were proportionally more females with a disability, while the ratio shifts for those in their sixties.

From age 70 onwards, due to lower male life expectancy, we see significantly higher proportions of disabled persons were female with 69 per cent of disabled persons aged 85 years and over being female.

The nice takeaway from these stats is that age-related disability is decreasing, very likely due to medical interventions :)

I’m surprised at you, being a medical expert an all. It’s well noised abroad that doctor’s recommend flat water over sparkling. Methinks it what’s in the bubbles. Not good for the tummy, apparently.

Yesterday I was watching CNBC and they listed Ireland as a country with zero restrictions for American tourists arriving here. Seems to be the case, was shocked they were pretty much encouraging travel here.

A Yank friend/acquaintance of mine - well educated, travelled, atypical Yank in many/most respects text me the other day asking was it ok for her to come over from San Fran as she was fed up adhering to the restrictions there and heard on US media she was free to travel not just throughout Ireland but many European countries. She got a bit of a shock when I told her she could probably get into the country no problem but would then have to limit her movements to 5km.

My appetite is quite reduced for about a year now, so it's very easy for me. Years ago I used to be on high dose steroids a lot, which are absolutely ruinous to the metabolism. Another excellent reason to have had the colectomy. They ramp up the appetite, cause extreme sleeplessness, and change fat distribution radically. I think bring in lockdown has set my body not to look for the food it doesn't need. .

Regarding vitamin D, I had to be taken off that tablet because I was retaining too much calcium in the blood, which was making me unwell. However it seems I have plenty enough in my diet even though I don't take dairy. A few more practical healthy easy government-sponsored low-cost cookery programs for families wouldn't have gone amiss, leaving out most of the baked goodies (except for weekend treats).

RTÉ settles Leech 'Liveline' libel for €250,000

Joe Duffy apologises to Sinn Féin TD Aengus Ó Snodaigh for 'defamatory comments' on Liveline

Sinn Féin TD Donnchadh Ó Laoghaire launches defamation case against RTÉ and Joe Duffy

The head of a Dun Laoghaire improvement scheme is suing RTE for libel over a Liveline show in which the host Joe Duffy denounced the charges that Dublin businesses pay.

Joe Duffy says RTE will "vigorously contest" contemplated libel proceedings by The Dublin Mint after the Liveline programme revealed the "Mint" as a sleazy operation which preys on the vulnerable, sending unsolicited medals and demanding 10s of thousands with menace.

Kevin Reynolds is an Irish Catholic priest who was falsely alleged in a news feature on RTÉ (the national television network of Ireland) to have raped and impregnated a Kenyan teenager.

JOE Duffy was forced to eat his words today after he had to make a public apology to Ryanair CEO after wrongly branding him a liar.

The issue arose when the RTE talking head asked the airlines CEO if he would refrain from telling lies after he rang into Liveline to defend his company’s policies.

During the live show Duffy said to the Ryanair boss: “You promise this time that you're on Liveline you won't tell lies, Michael?

As a result of the mud-slinging, the RTE radio host was forced to issue an apology today on his show.

He said: “During the conversation with Michael O’Leary on Wednesday July 19, a previous issue arose about a flight from Luton in 2011 and a previous appearance by the Ryanair CEO, Mr O’Leary, on Liveline in 2011.

“I accused Michael O’Leary of having told lies. Michael O’Leary said he did not lie, but was speaking on the basis of information he had.

“I am happy to say that Michael O’Leary did not tell lies, he is not a liar, and that particular word should not have been used and I apologies to him for
