I don't think I Should Be So Lucky is a very strong song. I don't think all the stuff that was churned out by the bucketload by Stock Aitken and Waterman in the late 80s has really stood the test of time. Never hear any of it now.

That's a fair point. I thought songs like I Should Be So Lucky and Never Gonna Give You Up (which I only now realised wasn't a number 1 in Ireland) are classic 80s pop songs.
But probably I'm not the best person to judge that: I am a big fan of the SAW production machine and have many albums that they produced

Ah no, there were some good songs, but on the whole if there is any radio show etc playing 80s hits, that stuff is rarely played which I suppose means it was of it's time, but it just didn't merit classic status. Unlike Tiffany which is well established as an 80s classic.
I'd view a lot of SAW late 80s stuff in the same way that I'd view X-Factor winners now. Big hits and lots of hype at the time, but won't be played 20 years from now. I suppose Pop Idol / X-Factor etc was the natural progression from SAW.0 -
