Well I used to get loads of error messages, kernel errors and other problems that required full installs, and the extensive use of back-ups. Installed SP1 and have never had a Windows Error since. Big download though.

Sp1 fixes some of the bugs that come free with your purchase of Xp

sp2 is out before the end of the year
