Can't tell if this is good or bad for Cyrpto, yes it's getting a lot of attention to it and making headlines but when it crashes hard it'll make a lot of negative news about Cyrpto being a ponzi.

The entire market dropped 40% in one day last year and most coins dropped 95% over the span of 2018. It's the rollercoaster that's it's biggest attraction.

Am I getting carried-away or this is massive news? (bigger than Microstrategy)

PS: and true story - I say the price spike on my phone before the Telsa news and the first thing coming to mind was: what has Elon Musk done again?

As far as Tesla/Musk are concerned, we have passed it already ;-)

    Congrats Hodlers.

We dig, dig, dig, dig, dig, dig, dig in our mine the whole day through
To dig, dig, dig, dig, dig, dig, dig is what we really like to do
It ain't no trick to get rich quick
If you dig dig dig with a shovel or a pick
In a mine! In a mine! In a mine! In a mine!
    Where a million diamonds shine!

We dig, dig, dig, dig, dig, dig, dig from early morn till night
We dig, dig, dig, dig, dig, dig, dig up everything in sight
We dig up diamonds by the score
    A thousand rubies, sometimes more
But we don't know what we dig 'em for
We dig dig dig a-dig dig

    Heigh-ho, heigh-ho
    Heigh-ho, heigh-ho, heigh-ho
    I's hoddling we shall go

"In January 2021, we updated our investment policy to provide us with more flexibility to further diversify and maximize returns on our cash that is not required to maintain adequate operating liquidity. As part of the policy, which was duly approved by the Audit Committee of our Board of Directors, we may invest a portion of such cash in certain alternative reserve assets including digital assets, gold bullion, gold exchange-traded funds and other assets as specified in the future. Thereafter, we invested an aggregate $1.50 billion in bitcoin under this policy and may acquire and hold digital assets from time to time or long-term. Moreover, we expect to begin accepting bitcoin as a form of payment for our products in the near future, subject to applicable laws and initially on a limited basis, which we may or may not liquidate upon receipt."

Directly copied from the SEC Form 10-K filed by Tesla

I'll be hodling right now because I've sold bitcoin on previous highs and bought back in due to fomo. What's everyone else's plan? This is a fairly ringing endorsement from Musk, dogecoin affection aside.

    1) Emigrate

    Portugal afaik is 28% CGT

Its a bit high but if you are paying tax it means you made profit

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 514 ✭✭✭BrandonBay86

Yup Portugal 0% for Crypto if you’re a private individual / not a company.

There’s gonna be quite a few citadels there at this rate.

Are people actually doing this? I mean i know 33% Capital gains is a bit high but seeing the returns on crypto have been insane is it actually worth it moving to somewhere like Portugal instead of just paying the tax and continuing to live here. Not that travel is possible at moment...

I have many reasons for wishing to emigrate, but Irish taxes, the cost and need for expensive Irish legal services all your life, the piss-poor third world health system, general Irish dysfunctionality, the absolutely crap weather and and lack of sunshine, the worlds highest inheritance taxes, the worlds highest CGT, are high among them. DIRT. Europes highest car ownership costs. Thick politicians like Gormley being allowed to make policy and the general sway socialist thinking has in this country...

Yes, some people are actually thinking of leaving this soaking wet socialist paradise and find the prospect enticing, and not at all a negative.

The crypto exemption in Portugal isn’t very clear to me. Depending on the sources you get different information. Anyone seriously looking into it should definitely get advice from a local tax lawyer before making the move IMO.

    Depends on the amount ...

If we are talking 10000 euros worth of crypto to dispose of, no one will move for this. If we are talking 1 million almost everyone will at least consider it. And a lot of people on here are probably in a grey zone somewhere in between.

If you did decide to move to Portugal and avoid the 33% CGT here is there a time limit on when you can move back or will the Irish government hound you forever. I know its historically very difficult to change ones domicile I'm also aware of the residency rules, so after three years in Portugal you are no longer ordinary resident but I'd assume you are still Irish domiciled for tax purposes. So would you have to move permanently? And what about any assets you leave here like say your house?

It’s a grey area but you’re looking at 3 years minimum it appears (if you were to ever return).

Might take 1inch soon but sushi is quite some distance to be fair!
