I bought those Heinz little plastic pots of beans for the Mrs. She said they were completely different from the tins and horrible.

They can barely pass as food.

Haven’t had a tin of baked beans in years but I always loved them on toast with loads of butter, over chips (especially when they made the chips a little soggy) or mashed into mashed potato.

No, the devils food is rice pudding.

You, Sir (or Madam), have obviously never, ever had a good rice pudding. Top tip: Raisins/sultanas make a world of difference.

Rank. Egg and chips on its own is pretty diabolical, never mind adding in beans. Bottom line is, baked beans are 'scusting...on their own, as part of a fry, on top of a regular dinner......just rank all round. Only perverts eat beans.

Peas, on the other hand, now there's a real game changer. Anything 'meat' based that comes out of a tin isn't real food, in my book. You'd think we were living in a zombie apocalypse the way some people behave. I was in Budapest a few years ago. They had all sorts of tinned rubbish. Pizza slice in a can was a huge hit with the lads. There was also something like this, but we didn't have the bottle to test it out.

Tried them and quite liked them - not enough beans, though.
    Is that brand still around?

I haven't seen them in a while. They were quite good.

There really is a market for "proper" beans.

    ... or cold.

This is where I draw the line.

Had them in a alternative lasagna recently. Actually was delicious!

I'm planning on having burgers and chips tomorrow night... I might have to have some beans on the side!

I draw the line at beans over chips

They have to be beside them, and only make one or two chips soggy.

The only line crossed when it comes to beans is people putting them into ramekins.

Ditto. I’m a big fan of beans, but I thought those pots were foul. Don’t like Heinz in general. Bachelors would be my go to. Also love them with a bit of curry sauce added.

An Ulster Fry has too much bread.
    Not enough meat.
I suppose it’s a good way to get rid of stale bread though.

Batchelors baked beans are the absolute best baked bean.
A bit of smoked paprika and black pepper if you're feeling fancy. Slow cooked on the hob so the sauce thickens with a few mashed beans, then put it on :
    - waffels (the beans go in the holes)
    - Toast (extra butter)
    - Chips and sausages

I remember when I was small, my dad got some potato cakes from roches that were breadcrumbed and had a filling of baked beans.

Also, shout out to the tins of spaghetti and sausages. Batchelors don't do them, so i've never had the beans version.

The only thing more degenerate than eating baked beans is putting curry powder in them.
    Peasants!

A ramekin is the only acceptable way to serve baked beans (if you absolutely have to serve baked beans). That way I can easily remove said beans without them touching my food or utensils!

Stick a knob of butter in your beans when you're heating them on the hob and they'll turn extra creamy / thick.

As for ramekin, that is not acceptable. It is indicative of an insufficient portion of beans. When you're eating your meal you don't want to have to ration the beans, or spend wondering if your current fork-full of food is worthy of a helping of beans, debating whether or not you'll have enough left to see you through to the end of the meal. Running out of beans mid-meal is distressing.

Haven't read the whole thread so this has probably been asked already, but what the hell has happened to curried beans?

I used to occasionally enjoy tin with a baked spud or some rice as a quick healthy(ish) lunch, as they are handy to lob into a microwave when you're on site in the middle of nowhere with work, but they seem to have vanished from Tesco (I don't be in Dunnes or SuperValu)

I suppose they're easy enough to convert into curry beans by adding powder etc, but surely to god they weren't unpopular enough to withdraw them from the shelves?

The ramekin also removes that certain amount of intimacy between the beans and its neighbours. A fried tomato is good company for beans.

A sausage barrier will come in handy too, just don't place the fried egg adjacent to the beans.

When they are put into separation mode, the quality of the place usually looks like below

This will be a controversial opinion but I staunchly believe beans should always be adjacent to, but never on top of another food item. The exception to this rule is mash.

This allows for better control of sogginess. Chips, toast, scrambled eggs etc etc, always adjacent.
