Sound issue

Dell Inspiron 5770 Windows 10 Sound will work plugged to external speakers but in built speakers won't. I have trawled through the settings and updated drivers etc. Had to disconnect the CD player and the ribbon connecting it t motherboard. Might that be the issue? Or are the internal speakers kaput?
