It looks like Biden will now nominate Judge Merrick Garland to the AG post, following the GA result..

Its a long road that has no turning...

Eliminate the filibuster, pursue aggressive electoral reform legislation. It's the smartest move politically, given the Republicans are losing demographically.

Manchin has already categorically ruled that out and since he's from West Virginia it's not like they can threaten to primary him.

Apparently they can pass 1 money bill per year with a simple majority (that's how Trump got his Tax cuts through) but they cannot get the Voting Rights act passed without Republican support (which they obviously will not get).

I think their only hope is to try and win a greater majority in 2022. It's a favourable lineup for them since they did so badly in 2016.

There are 2 Republican senators from states that Biden won (PA & WI) and zero Democrats from states that Trump won. Warnock is back up again though and so is Kelly in AZ since they both only won special elections.

They should introduce a load of bills that have popular support and actually force the Republicans to filibuster them. At least that way they can paint them as the obvious blockage in the works when Ted Cruz is reading a cook book for 4 hours or whatever.

Seems the Biden adminstration is pushing to appoint Kristen Clark to head up the Civil Rights section of the Justice Department. Someone who has publicly made bigoted anti-white statements, and supported anti-Jewish speakers while at Harvard.

So you're relying on a nearly 30 year old statement which was criticising the Bell Curve? Which in itself was also pseudoscientific in the claim it made. In the original letter she said that she doesn't necessarily believe in it but frankly, the fact she hasn't mentioned it for nearly thirty years makes it all a tad irrelevant.

But mention Trump being fined for refusing to rent to black people and you get told "Oh you can't judge him on that, it was years ago and it was a different time back then" :pac:

Ah, that's not the case. She was given opportunities to disavow said beliefs, which she most definitely did not do. She also made clear statements in support of that speakers views, which is evident in the pieces written for the Harvard publication.

It's hardly irrelevant when a person who is meant to head up an organisation focused on equality is making clearly racist statements. I doubt somehow there would be such generous equivocation if the situation was flipped.

Delighted to see Samantha Power take a key role in the new Govn't. Wish her well in a post she is very suited to.

'President-elect Joe Biden has announced ambassador Samantha Power as his nominee for Administrator of the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) and has also said he will elevate the position to become a member of the National Security Council. Power served in the Obama administration as the US permanent representative to the United Nations.

    In a statement, Biden said:

Samantha Power is a world-renowned voice of conscience and moral clarity — challenging and rallying the international community to stand up for the dignity and humanity of all people. I know firsthand the unparalleled knowledge and tireless commitment to principled American engagement she brings to the table, and her expertise and perspective will be essential as our country reasserts its role as a leader on the world stage. As USAID Administrator, Power will be a powerful force for lifting up the vulnerable, ushering in a new era of human progress and development, and advancing American interests globally." Guardian

An interesting one given that USAID has long been used by successive US administrations of both strips as a front for the CIA and in staging coups. Most recently over 400m going through USAID to the far right leaders that the US backed to overthrow the current Venezuela regime.

Far-right! Are you taking Madura's word for it or what?
Guaidó was a member of the social-democratic Popular Will, now independent, and although his peers characterize Guaidó as a centrist, Maduro places him on the right of the political spectrum.[195][196] Regarding politics in the United States, Guaidó stated that he was unfamiliar with the subject but has commented: "What they refer to as socialist in the United States is what we’d call a Social Democrat here."

Power is a depressing choice and has blood on her hands for her part in Libya but we all expected that sort of appointment. Biden is a hawk who supported the Iraq war and is close friends with Dick Cheaney ffs.

You will get some progressive stuff from Biden but not on American exceptionalism, but everyone knew that from day 1 so it is what it is.

Americans don't care about foreign policy so whatever USA get up to, it won't affect Biden to much with Joe Bloggs.

The US has a long history of backing far right authoritarian regimes and or over throwing governments to install said regimes which will be compliant with US policies.

The fact that the current regime in power in Venezuela is reprehensible does not change that fact. Especially since the US played a large role in bringing Venezuela to the point they are at now going back to prior to this current Venezuelan regime when Chavez was in power with USAID playing a role throughout. USAID has a long and very disgusting history of behaviour when it comes to over throwing governments the US does not like. USAID was involved in the ousting of Lugo in Paraguay in 2012 as another more recent example.

Sadly very true when it comes to foreign policy there is not much difference between Democrats and Republicans when it comes to the US backing far right authoritarian regimes who will work with and or be compliant with US demands.

Yeah but you said, specifically, that the US were trying to install a far-right leader in Venezuela. Juan Guaidó is not far-right, nowhere near so.

Apologies I should have said in terms of Venezuela a right wing US puppet government in Venezuela.

Given that they can't have crowds at the Inauguration, the flags look impressive.

Obama had to attend 8 different balls on the night of his inauguration. As a 78 year old it's probably best that Biden doesn't have to endure that tomorrow night.

Just wish the best to Biden and Harris and their team. Sanity restored.

I dunno, he seems fairly sprightly here, telling that we didn't see the previous POTUS ever volunteer anywhere, nothing in it for him I suppose.

Trump just threw paper towels at the Puerto Ricans. Can't say he didn't do his bit.

That's not true: don't forget Hurricane Maria when Trump tossed paper towels like basketballs at the waiting crowd. Maybe given that disaster, that's why Trump stopped those kind of PR stunts - well that and his noted misanthropy.

Funny if an Irish politician helped at a food bank, he/she'd be absolutely vilified and rightly so.

Senate Democrats planning to move a new bill. It's certainly a good one for democracy and elections.

    Why would they be vilified?

"Should be in the Dail stopping people needing food banks"

Burton was asked to open one and got slaughtered so nobody in or near to being in power will be seen in one since - even if opening one is quite different

Janet Yellen’s Senate confirmation hearing is ongoing today.

Who had this in their Senate Republican bingo from the minute that the Republican President left office ?

The sheer audacity of saying that and keeping a straight face while doing so, you have to give him credit. But I am sure we will be hearing all about the massive deficits ( which they largely created) suddenly being a problem again. Republican hypocrisy will be on steroids now with Biden in charge from Wednesday on.

Typical of America to plant thousands and thousands of flags everywhere for the inauguration.

    Americans really do love flags.
