not expecting anything here in Meath from this, much too far north unless the front tracks north a good bit.

Looks like Dublin also escapes this, I think the temps would be a little high by a degree or 2 if the band pushed further NE

Kildare looks to be the cut off point for the precipitation unless there’s a little push north. Could be snowing in Athy but not in Naas or Maynooth.

Also precipitation may be too light for anything significant even though the temperatures will be favourable. Either way something will go wrong.

I remember I think it was end of December 1999 or maybe 2000 we had a slider Low, Airflow was direct north and Galway had maybe 2 to 3 inches of snow.

December 2000. Epic snowfall in Galway.

What are they doing in the Hyacinth House?

    Met Éireann website

Tuesday night: Very cold and frosty on Tuesday night with scattered wintry showers near west and north coasts. Dry and clear elsewhere for a time with frost and icy stretches developing as temperatures fall to between -3 and +2 degrees. A spell of rain will move into parts of the southwest and west late in the night and as this moves northeastwards it is likely to turn to snow in parts of the midlands, north and east.

Wednesday: Very cold in many places on Wednesday with spells of rain and sleet and some falls of snow in parts of the midlands east and north for a time in the morning

To me it looks like its moving sotheastwards rather than northeastwards.
They think its taking a more middle to north route as regards snow anyhow. Again the morning update may change too.

As this moves northeastwards think that's a tying error in there behalf nothing indicates the front moving northeastwards should be southeastwards.

Highest risk based on the current GFS, ECMWF ICON & Harmonie models show the highest risk been across inland Connacht Leinster and north/northeast munster. Anymore shifts further north on tomorrows runs would bring south Ulster into play. Precipitation on the northern side/cold side of the low may not be very heavy only giving small dustings in places. One thing that's is with us is the freezing level is much lower than previous days.

Some streamers possible across Coastal areas of north Connacht and north Ulster Wednesday also.

I think it might be wise to put the snow plough people on high alert.

My advice is don't fret over who gets what. We'll know much more tomorrow.

    Still changes to come. :)

They said the same thing after 9 o’clock news on weather this evening if memory serves me well with snow for midlands and east

I'm going for a line Sligo to Waterford. South of that and you're in with a shot. Tomorrow morning will firm up the track.

THe 18Z ECMWF has backed off a little on the snow intensity in the southeast Wednesday morning. It soundings, though, are slightly less marginal, such as the one from around Kilkenny/Waterford border, in the dark blue area. A couple of hundred metres of a zero-degree, saturated isothermal layer near the surface would probably give dinnerplate flakes for a while.

Looks a better situation than yesterday.

00z rolling out, slightly less precip, but still crossing where the 18z said. Uppers slightly cooler overland along the front, which is good for snow.

Looks increasingly likely it's a Connaught, south Leinster and east Munster event for this system

Temperatures for Wednesday though are really struggling. Snow showers in to northern counties too.

Latest charts overnight are big downgrade for this event, could still change but very little showing on high resolution charts.

Much less precip and further South.

Thanks. Being very IMBY, that could work out well for South / West Munster so if the precipitation is effectively getting repelled by the cold air over those parts as opposed to further north...

Cold spell on Wednesday is still on its way but ANOTHER warm core is forecast! Why do we get so many warm cores?

  • Registered Users Posts: 7,119 ✭✭✭pad199207

BBC not even getting the precipitation into Leinster. Rain gets into Munster however.

Precipitation appears to be falling as snow above 200-300 metres already!

Disappointing how even that relatively minor snow event slipped through our fingers. How fickle snow is, number one on the fickle list followed by thunderstorms. Looks like most will have to wait for at least 10 or 14 days for the next shot. It'll stay cold though so maybe that will help with sea and ground temps.

Yes, rain is coming with a sleet mix but some areas look like getting some snow.

Thought it would be too mild here in Cork but high ground probably get some.

I find that showery setups provide a lot more snow and limited marginality. I very rarely get snow out of frontal systems.

“ Northerly winds will bring further showers of rain, sleet and snow across the north of Northern Ireland as well as northern and western Scotland. Snow accumulations will be generally confined to ground above 100m away from coasts, but some temporary slushy deposits are possible to low levels at times in any heavier showers. 1-3cm is likely to accumulate above 100m, and as much as 5-10cm above 250m, this mostly across high ground of Scotland. Ice will form readily as temperatures quickly fall away rapidly through both Tuesday and Wednesday evenings.”

Met Office warning mentions my area though I feel they could be more optimistic. If it’s frequent it could lie at sea level

Maybe we need to change the title. I mistook Connaught for Munster. Sorry for the offence Connaught :pac:

    SHOCK HORROR!

The European 06Z Hi Res models not really making much of this at all, little precipitation and keeping it much further S.

The WRF would tally most with the Met Eireann forecast. Very cold day and night to follow with icy road and footpath conditions being a possible issue.
