Laptop screen goes black when plugged into mains

My father's laptop screen goes black whenever it's plugged into the mains, it means it can only be used when its running on battery power alone.

What could be causing this? It's a Windows 7 machine upgraded to Windows 10

I hate this machine with a fiery passion but I'm forced to use it as my laptop has gone in for repairs

“I have experienced the same problem. Screen goes black when power cord is connected.
I found that the screen brightness adjustment is reversed.
Try for yourself.
Right click the start menu, open power options, choose when to turn off display, under plugged in adjust the brightness level towards the lower setting and the screen will brighten with power cord connected, save changes and restart.”

Is there a screen brightness function on the keyboard? Try to brighten when plugged in, it could be set to very low.
