Yet Klopp picked the team, and if it was half-strength that is on the manager. On the hour mark he sent on Firmino, Robertson, Jota and Fabinho, so they certainly didn't finish the game too weakened. If a team is going to be held up as on a level above others as was previously claimed, shouldn't it fare better?

Ultimately, there is an element of the LFC fanbase on this forum that can't accept any questioning of their team whatsoever - not putting you in that bracket btw - and they throw their toys out of the pram whenever one dares to question it in some capacity. I heard the same thing last season when I challenged the view that Liverpool were easily the best team in Europe, and when I said upon being asked that I thought it was PSG I was mocked. We saw which of the two teams fared better last season.

In this instance, this feels exactly the other way around. The comments about Liverpool being the best team in the league were said initially by fans of multiple clubs. Indeed the first statement about it that started the conversation was by a Manchester United fan. I would go so far as to say that in this instance some people just can't let positive comments about Liverpool go. Picking a result that wasn't in the aforementioned league to criticise the team with makes as much sense as saying they weren't the best team in the league last season because they fielded a team of kids in the league cup.

And yes, it is on the manager that he picked a weaker team, safe in the knowledge that worst case scenario this was a game he could afford to lose to rest a few legs. Like in the league cup. And unlike in the, again, aforementioned league. I can very confidently say that Liverpool fans are far less bothered by tonights result than they would be by a loss in the league.

So this all just feels like the absolute wrong game to go shouting 'I told you so' after... wait for a few losses or draws in the league, and for them to drop a few places, and then you can point out that they're not the best team in the league because they won't be.

Are they the best team in the league? I don't know. If the full squad was available I think yes. Even if Gomez was available, I think yes. With both out, and a slew of other injuries throughout defence and midfield it's a trickier call, we just have to see how long some of those injuries last. But as it stands, after what could probably be roundly agreed upon as the toughest batch fo fixtures of any of the current top 6 clubs, they're joint top. The other standouts so far are Spurs and Chelsea. Given Liverpool's current position, as well as being reigning champs, it's hard not to give them the nod for the moment. We'll see how things are a month from now - they'll either be much better, or much worse.

Yes, it says I read the thread earlier and remembered the posts. Here's one that took me a little longer to find, touching on what I mentioned above.

You realize that I'm not a Liverpool fan right? In terms of PSG being the best team in Europe. Last season was the first time they ever got past the Semi's iirc? They tended to always be strong up until the QF/SF and then look like a team of individuals unless I'm mistaken?

I'm not sure what you're looking to achieve here.

Using a post whereby I say PSG are not the best team in Europe and they didn't end up winning the CL probably not a get example either. Congrats to them for reaching the final.

To be fair Liverpool and Munich where the two stand out teams in the whole of Europe from very early last season ,

I thought it would be one of the two who would win it ,
I still think it would have been the final or semi final if Adrian wasn't in goals for the Madrid game but that's a different conversation

This season I think Munich are clear favourites but one bizarre result or ref's decision can always put an end to that,

Boards might be on the only place on the planet where people are going to seriously read into a Liverpool result where they sent out their seconds to play in a group stage match where they've virtually already qualified

Strange. You'd expect a team head and shoulders above the rest in the Prem not to be beaten 2-0 at home by the side 7th in Serie A. Must have been another 'freak result'.

    That's just sad. :(

Shakhtar are leading Madrid 1-0. If this result stays the same, it will be Gladbach and Shakhtar that occupy the top two spots going into the last round.

And if Glabach beat Inter later on, Real's fate won't be in their own hands going into the last group matchday.

When's the last time Real haven't reached the knock outs? Jaysus

    2-0 Shakhtar!

Think Courtois could have done better. Beaten at the near post.

There's a part of me that wants to see Madrid knocked out at the group stages

This group is in the tricky category more than hard imo but Real Madrid & Inter haven't fair made a dog's dinner out of it.

Real at least still with a good chance, or really good chance to get out of the group.

Inter not really. They are preparing for Europa league.

If Gladbach win tonight, then it's out of Madrid's hands to qualify. They would need Shaktar to avoid beating Inter who would be knocked out of Europe completely at that stage.

    That gets interesting indeed :)

Shakhtar beat Madrid home and away, 5-2 on aggregate, whereas they lost to Monchengladbach 0-10 over the 2 games against them!

    Best of luck to Kelleher

Darmian has put Inter ahead. Shot went through Sommer's legs quite comically.

Can see Liverpool getting caught out here. They've had a few chances but not taken them

    Good save by Kelleher.

Plea equalises for Gladbach at the end of the half.

That Gravenberch fella looks like somebody who will be worth 50 million quid 3 or 4 years from now.

Ajax still a lovely team to watch.

Great goal by Lukaku to put Inter back in front. Brushed off Zakaria which isn't easy.

Zidane makes mental note to buy that man a pint:P

    Lukaku scores again!

Plea gets a second goal for Gladbach. 3-2 Inter now. Highlights of that one will be worth watching later.

Plea so close to a second hat-trick in the Champions League but it's disallowed for offside.

Firmino doing himself no favours, that's an awful miss

Kelleher with a super stop. He deserves a clean sheet.
