I’m considering on giving my father one of these for Christmas. I’m considering getting the Gallagher’s one. Well mainly because I know they like the brand and have had bad experience with other brands when it comes to electric fence equipment.
Also are they reliable and worth the money?

    Thanks in advance.

    What does it do exactly

Well from what I’m told. You basically place it on the fence and it will tell you roughly the distance where the fault on your fence may be.

Tells you the direction of the fault not the distance away.
I’ve not used one but think it would be a great gift. It’s the sort of thing that I would look at and think it would be very handy but a bit too expensive to buy. Getting it as a gift would be wonderful, I love useful practical gifts rather than general tat.

These are around €60-70 in Co-op stores They are grey and slip easily into a coat pocket. No wires, just 2 electrodes.

I know its expensive but I have the gallagher one a few years now. Probably the best money ever spent. Its a gallagher one.

Walk fence find fault. Turn off with a cheap gsm switch and fix. Turn on with gsm switch and test again. Saves alot of time.

One like these. Sim lasts couple of years without topping up. Ring number and it turns on or off.

Thanks for that. So you just order a sim for it from a mobile phone provider is it

Thanks, I’ll probably give the Gallagher’s one ago if they are worth while and it’s not to clutter some either.

I've a Gallagher and speedright/pel one. There is always a small difference between reading, the pel reading higher and its a little more sentive to faults but its a little too big for my pockets.
The Gallagher is smaller and a lot neater, id have it in my pocket and not notice it there.
If id yo pick it would be the gallagher

Just look up "gsm plug" in ebay or aliexpress just get the UK type.

It will text you saying it is off when u have credit on it. Works for a good while with a sim and no credit

Have you to put credit in it often?

    This seems useful.
So, basically you text the number and it turns on and off the plug?

Exactly. Great job. Great time-saver when accompanied with the fault finder.

I'd imagine the fault finder would be sending a lot of lads like me both directions. She'd be off the scale when it's raining too. (Does a fair bit of that too round here)

I like that switch off fence from the phone.that would be more use I'd imagine as most lads who put up their own electric, have a fair idea where trouble might be.

Fence can be kept in top nick with tester. I have even found couple of the gold foot pigtails shorting out. Never would have found that with out it.

Gsm switch is out of stock on amazon, watched a forcefield video of their own switch from 2015, seems it's not available to buy either.

When you top up a sim card, how long can you receive calls for?

Expensive them fault finders. He'd want to be earning his keep getting him one.I've a couple of these pocket fence testers,at €25 each i find them great. You will soon get to know your fence for better or worse.

We have a paddock system here and there could be hours spent finding a fault. Now its just touch the line for each paddock and look for a high amperage draw then follow the line touching it in a few places and it will pinpoint the fault. The time I have saved over the years is great. I have never used the normal tester since.

Have the exact model- was lucky to pick it up locally for €30. It is just so handy. Light years ahead of the ones with the wire.

If you have WiFi where fence is plugged in then a WiFi switch is even better.

No messing with sim cards and or text messages. The app for a WiFi switch will clearly show it's current status as on or off with just a glance. But obviously requires WiFi at fence unit and data coverage for your phone.(dosen't need to be particularly fast connection though.)

We put in isolator switches so we could knock out different areas/sections to work on. Very convenient and no technology required.

I do see the advantages of gsm switch but the location of energizer not always have phone coverage

Maybe in some areas, but the vast majority of the country has enough signal to receive text messages outdoors. There are other options also other than just GSM or Wifi.

But can't disagree with strategic placed isolators being simple and convenient alternative. GSM and WiFi options also allow you to check the status saving the annoying walk when you think you may have forgotten to close an isolator but actually didn't.
