Florence & The Machine - No Light, No Light ; another classic Florence track compared to a meh Katy Perry track

Tegan and Sara - Closer ; energetic indie pop track that defines the sound of the 2010s for me, and 'twas the first song that popped in to my head when making nominations

Foster The People - Pumped Up Kicks ; like both of 'em, but this is just another of those iconic 2010s tracks for me, and I love the upbeat music contrasting the dark lyrics

The Black Keys - Lonely Boy ; like both, but this would be my favourite Black Keys song, also one of the simplest but greatest music videos of all-time

Pink - Can't stand the other one.
Black Keys - Never knew it by name or anything but it's cool.

Ok in the first match I'm going for Katy Perry. There's already a much better Florence song through and variety is the spice of life.

In the second I was all set to vote for Aloe Blacc but that Tegan and Sara is a choon so once again I'm putting them through.

And in the third I love both but I prefer the Pink track, it was my fave of hers sung live at Wembley.

    So....

Katy Perry - Firework 7 6 Florence & The Machine - No Light, No Light
    Aloe Blacc - I Need A Dollar 6 7 Tegan and Sara - Closer
Foster The People - Pumped Up Kicks 6 7 Pink - Try

The three that missed out will get a second bite at the cherry though...

Match 13: Regina Spektor - not mad about it but it's not Pitbull.
Match 14: Two Door Cinema Club - two catchy tunes but this one is more likely to wind up on a playlist for me.
Match 15: Janelle Monáe - CHOOOOOON. She's really talented and this is a great song. Don't like the other one at all.
Match 16: Tom Petty - mainly for the pretty instrumentation, don't really mind which of these go through though tbh.

Regina Spector - All the Rowboats ; argh, Timber really is a guilty pleasure, but this one is class and one of my favourites in the tournament, so must give it the vote

Alexandra Stan - Mr. Saxobeat ; I like both, but there's not really an awful lot of dance tracks in the tournament, so will give Alexandra Stan the nod here

Katy Perry feat. Snoop Dogg - California Gurls ; it's a tune, and not too fond of that Janelle Monae song#

Arkells - Relentless ; really like both, but Relentless feels more 2010's while Something Good Coming could've been released at any point in the past 50 years

Match 15: Janelle Monáe - Didn’t know it before but I like it
Match 16: Arkells - Relentless don’t feel strongly one way or the other but this one edged it

I'm voting for Mr Saxobeat here, mainly because I agree with LeVar's reasoning on his vote.

    So as a result

Alexandra Stan - Mr. Saxobeat 6 5 Two Door Cinema Club - Undercover Martyn

Not the end of the road for Two Door Cinema Club though...

Match 17: Yeah Yeah Yeahs - I never got the hype around Daft Punk. "Get Lucky" was alright when it was released but I think being overplayed killed it a bit. And, unlike "Sacrilege", it doesn't have a gospel choir!

Match 18: Little Green Cars - One of my favourite Irish bands, sadly no longer together (though most have rebanded under Soda Blonde, who put up a strong showing in the prelims). This is just a really well written, beautifully song. Manages to be sombre but also quite catchy. Also, I must confess that I'm not as keen on Linkin Park as others in this forum seem to be; the song is grand, but doesn't really inspire me to listen to it on repeat.

Match 19: Villagers - Backing the Irish contingent again! :p I love Villagers and I love this song. I appreciate "Uptown Funk" for being very catchy and well produced, but again I think being overplayed killed it a bit for me. (Also maybe it's just me but I think it would have worked better with a female vocalist)

Match 20: David Bowie - This is a tough one, two very good songs. "Gold On The Ceiling" is obviously catchier and more memorable on first listen, but "Lazarus" is a really beautiful song. Mournful, moving and with some awesome saxophone. I'd never have been a huge fan of Bowie while he was alive, but I listened to the Blackstar album shortly after he passed away and was surprised by how much I enjoyed it. Challenging but immensely rewarding.

    Linkin Park Burn It Down

My nomination and one of their best songs. Can't listen to the others now to judge

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,067 ✭✭✭✭ShaneU

Not buying the overplayed excuse, if it's on the radio a lot it means it's a good song!
