are they normally open or normally closed?

The various spiel from BMW suggest normally closed IMO " For example, during the warming-up phase and when operating at low loads, the BMW Active Kidney Grille is closed completely to maximize the aerodynamic efficiency"

I'd think folk noticing the engine warming up quicker are used to diesels that don't generate as much excess heat compared to petrols :)

Don't really see where there's an arguement to be honest. So, having cold air passing through a cold engine just warming up, as opposed to cold air flowing under the said engine warming up has no affect you believe?

    No argument :)
The rad blocks air flow through an engine quite effectively........... the inner loop is isolated from the rad by a closed stat to enable fast heat-up.
The BMW spiel states when closed it aids aerodynamics :)

"For example, during the warming-up phase and when operating at low loads, the BMW Active Kidney Grille is closed completely to maximize the aerodynamic efficiency"

It doesn't say to minimise heat up time.

The engine is liquid cooled, not air cooled.

Yeah in fairness Augeo, you totally ruined it for me as I thought it was a simple clever idea to keep the engine cosy during warm up period, but I never gave much more thought to it. I'd say you're right about the closed thermostat does prob +95% of this anyway. Having less cold air blowing through the engine bay no doubt helps a bit, but not as much as I prob first thought.

    Thanks for that!

I'm being genuine enough with that though. I usually try and weed about the PR crap from the genuine innovations, or at least think I do, that car companies throw at us. I remember seeing the flaps on the F10, and thinking that's clever and no one would prob even know they are there. Now they are using it more of a marketing pitch for active aero etc.

I'd say your 110 on the thermostat though, which didn't even enter my head.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,678 ✭✭✭frozenfrozen

people used to use radiator blinds to stop over cooling in winter so there probably is an effect on how soon it comes up to temperature but in all that marketing stuff the emphasis is on aero not warming up

edit: as above, not arguing just talking about it

Is this not essentially a Porsche Taycan for slightly less wealthy people?
Looks great anyway. I increasingly think I may go electric next.

By the way Wailin, are you the owner of a f10 530d now? Did the deal happen?

No. Had another call about it recently but lockdown means no one can view the car. I think I'd actually crap my pants if someone said they'd take it off me! Got it back from the dealers after a brake fluid service all washed and spotless. Got me thinking why am I even selling it. It's a gorgeous car if I do say so myself!

I think you are mad selling it and will likely have to take a hit to get it sold.

I can’t imagine you could replace the 540i with anything that would compare for what you will get for it.
I would hold on if at all possible.

yeah I had written a lot less, but took it out, best case scenario, less than you thought, truthfully, its usually a lot less... why i put any thoughts of selling my car out of my head, couldnt even get a decent petrol in this country any more around the years I would be looking any way, makes the decision pretty easy for me and actually better, because the constant itch to change is a head melt and financial drain

Your ad seems to have been removed. Did you manage to sell your car?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,446 ✭✭✭Wailin

Made a decision to keep it. It won't sell in the current climate and I won't sell it for what people expect to pay for it ie. half nothing. Carsfan made a very valid point. If i sold it for 40k, there's nothing really out there of equal value that would satisfy me. I'd love an m340i touring, but they are nowhere near 40k.

Why a 340i touring? I would have thought your own is better car overall package for comfort etc. no?

Nothing as cool as a fast estate in fairness.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,841 ✭✭✭maddness

I think the M340i is probably the best of the B58 engined cars, especially in estate form.
As much as I love a 540i like Wallins car I have always thought that any fast car bigger than a 3 series size is rather pointless in Ireland. Driving fast on a motorway is boring and licence loosing here but a good drive on a backroad is always great craic as long as the car is not too big.
Small and fast equals a lot of fun, big and fast is very impressive but probably less fun in most situations.

I think a 3/4 series is a better match up with that B58 engine. Smaller, less refined and not as comfortable, yes, but sportier and better suited to a high revving petrol engine.

Most won't agree with me here, but the 5 series, imo, is more suited to the 3 litre diesel. It's a comfortable cruiser, not a sports car, and the higher torque, lower revs of a diesel suits it perfectly. Having had the 535d and now 540i, I came across this review and it makes a lot of sense.

The 5 might be more suited to the 3.0 diesel but not many folk do the mileage or long runs to suit IMO.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,398 ✭✭✭vintagevrs

I always had the impression that the 5 was suited to the diesel more from your responses/opinion on your own car. The 5 is so refined that it prob hides the diesel part very well in the cabin.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,446 ✭✭✭Wailin

Yes it certainly does, which is great with the diesel, but not so much when you want to hear the smooth straight 6 petrol! Did you take down your ad as well vintage?

The M140i is the complete opposite, it’s a hooligan. I actually think a large six cylinder diesel would be the perfect second car with one.

    Nope, still there :)

Donedeal had the nct expiry wrong, so I mailed them and they fixed it and spot lighted the ad for the trouble which was decent but maybe a different ad id.

Depends on what you're looking for. "Fun" typically means stiffer ride, more road noise, more wind noise, less refinement and less comfort. For many, its worth reducing the fun level a few clicks for an increase in every other area.

The only way around it is to have two cars with two functions, best of both worlds.

Agreed, I have plenty of fun but not much comfort. That’s why I think a fast 3 series or similar is hard to beat.
