Or just scrap it altogether and let the national, democratic vote decide the outcome?

Sure, but I can understand why individual states would feel weakened by that.

Another suggestion, often made, is to reform the system to distribute the Electoral college votes (or Election points) based on the ratio of voting in each state, rather than the 'winner takes all' system.

But even with the system the way it is right now, the idea that somebody, at the end of it all, can change their vote from how they pledged, is crazy.

Thousands of pages of posts here of people all excited that Donald Trump is been thrown out in a country over 4 thousand miles away. Yet we had buffoons like cowen and ahern here and hardly a squeak about domestic politics.. Probably less likes on the twitter, baords and facebooks posts for Irish politics.

Yeah everyone loves Cowen and Ahern

No, it needs to be federalized and made a standard procedure across the country so as to remove doubt. Part of the reason Trump's supporters are swallowing his absolute tripe is the fact that all 50 states seem to have different, overly complex rules, many of which are devoid of logic.

Pretty much what DeanAustin said In reply to this I agree.

I'd add with the federal level, there should be X amount of polling stations per x of population, also voting by mail should be standard if the polling station one can't be.

Theres plenty about domestic politics, the American election is big news here because we have to listen to what they're doing every day anyway and what they do over there can and will have some affect on us at times too.

Its not as dramatic or exciting, but it would be nice to see Irish people get half as engaged with our own domestic politics.

You see, you would need to go to one of the Irish election threads for that. Of which there are plenty when there's an election.

There are literally thousands of threads on Irish politics, going back years and years, on Boards.

Maybe they're invisible to whiny Trumpists?

Elections are clearly a state power. The constitution confers that to states.

Don't switch to Fox, they have gone full Democratic Party.

the electoral college votes on Dec 14th. it is all over by then.

And there is nothing in law that mandates that the college vote has to be inline with the actual votes - apparently its just tradition!

They have a republican senator on their panel. Granted they don't like Trump but how could you possibly defend his actions over the last 4 years and especially him throwing America electoral system under the bus and stoking up hatred.

balanced reporting/coment does not mean agreeing with nonsense and worse.

We've had four good years of watching the lefties cry, entirely worth it, hope your few weeks of false hope matches it.

Were you the guy who lost 500 euro on Trump? Or am I confusing you with someone else?

Everyone posting here will have a bias of some kind or other , yes even Mods - That is human nature.

But , the suggestion that there is an "institutional bias" at a site/organisation level driven by some command structure that says "only allow opinion X or Y" is completely incorrect.

Ah yeah but there's a clear bias on this thread anyway, I say that as someone who's happy that Biden won.

Some states have laws against faithless electors, but you're right for the most part. The main reason it's a thing is when electors used to have to travel long ways for the final vote and news didn't travel quickly in those days so was a mechanism to change the vote if new info came to light.

Sure but it is an Irish board and will be heavily connected with Irish people. Ireland these days is slightly to the left of the democratic party so are hardly going to go for Trump in large numbers.

I think the conspiracy may run deeper than any of us have previously imagined --

The dastardly Dems may have intercepted consignments of Covid vaccines and replaced said vaccines with Biden votes.

A "lot" of people are saying it,
    "Everyone" knows it,
But the "fake media" aren't reporting it.

People seem to forget the counting goes on in all states even though they have been declared.

Biden is racking up votes in California, New York, etc.

Still another 34% of the vote to be counted in California, that is going to increase the difference by another couple of million at least. They are just in no rush to get to the final count as it makes no difference to the EC part of the result.

Biden could be up to 6 or 7 million advantage in the popular vote by the time they complete everywhere.

    Fake news.

Discussions about Irish politics, and politicians and Peter Casey are as intense at appropriate times. Check out threads on the formation of the last government, Leo's escapades, the Maria Bailey affair for reference.

But right now this 'death by a thousand cuts' Donald is undergoing is the biggest topic on the planet.

Over 20 states have laws requiring the Electoral College voters in those states to vote in line with the democratic result, on a First Past The Post basis.

Maybe if you had wandered out of the GAA forum once in a while you would have seen lots of posts about biffo, Ahern, NAMA, bank bailouts, ECB, etc

And what happens in the US has huge fooking ramifications for little old Ireland or maybe you don't realise how many people in Ireland work for US mulitnationals including those in Mayo that work for Baxters, Allergan, Hollister, Coca Cola, Lionbridge.

And if anything someone with your name should be cheering for Biden with his Mayo roots unlike that orange gimp that the fookers in Clare are lauding.
