What is an iconic song

What is an iconic song, and how does the song reach iconic status.
For instance Another brick in the wall(floyd) is classed as iconic(to me its not even their best song). Although the son resonates with so many peoples version of going throught the education system. So is that what makes it iconic?
I was recently listening to a debate (in work) about iconic songs, and Echo Beach ( martha and the muffins) was classed as an iconic during this debate, its a song I like but I wouldn't say its iconic.
So in your opinion what makes an iconic song? And if possible give name the song and why you think its iconic

Think the song - much like it was presented in that video - is one that unites groups of a generation and captures part of it.

In the show the characters who are all very very different people had just had a massive falling out and were all moping about it in their own space in the house. But without their even knowing it the song united them. So I think the video itself was an artistic representation of how and why such a song is iconic.

I think an iconic song must capture a part of the - zeitgeist is not quite the right word from german - but Rasa is not quite the right word from Indian either - but some mix of the two of the generation it came out of.
