I may need to replace the pop up plug in a sink. Are they all a standard size?

I tried to take out the mechanism and managed to break/shear off the spindle part. So its stuck in the plug hole. If I can't get the spindle out, I might have to swap the plug unit itself - Im not sure if removing the waste trap will give enough access to try remove it from the underside. I'll have a better look later.
Has this happened anyone else? Any advice - :o

Thanks Tom. Had the spindle sprayed in WD40. Got it loose. Just got to grab a replacement and pop it in now.
