That will change next year when the low frequency 700 MHz coverage band (Band n28), one of the EU's 5g "Pioneer bands", is auctioned off by Comreg in a multi-band spectrum award, this band was cleared of TV broadcasting in March.

The current 5g band is the high frequency high capacity 3.4-3.8 GHz band (Band 42/43), the EU's 5g "Primary Pioneer band". 5g services were initially launched in this band due to its size and availability across the EU.

5G needs to be deployed in bands harmonized below 1 GHz, in particular the 700 MHz band, in order to enable nationwide and indoor 5G coverage

Lower frequencies, such as 700 MHz, are better suited to provide widespread coverage (both geographic and indoor)


The 700 MHz band consists of low frequency spectrum which by virtue of its propagation characteristics is particularly well suited for providing wide-area and indoor mobile coverage, because signals carried in the 700 MHz band are able to travel long distances and penetrate obstacles such as buildings.

The physical characteristics of the 700 MHz band means it is particularly well-suited to achieving wide-area and indoor coverage.
