    ...but nothing displaying in the inbox except for the welcome to boards.ie message which is read.

    It says 2 messages total, 1 unread but there's nothing else there.

    Concerned someone may have been trying to contact me and I don't know what they said or who it is.

    That's the symptom of a deleted spam PM. Send a PM to yourself and it'll reset the counter.

    As Spear mentioned, we recently had a number of spam accounts sign up and PM links to posters. The PMs have all been deleted in the background, but it's a glitch of the system that it still shows up in your PM counter. Send yourself a PM to reset it.
