I am an unregistered farmer for vat.

Can I claim the vat back on an electric log splitter which I bought recently

    If you're not registered, no

Not if you are not registered for VAT.

You can claim capital allowances on the value of the splitter, full cost including VAT.

    I'm not registered

But I though I could claim under the scheme for non registered farmers, where you can claim back vat on buildings, fencing equipment and items which are deemed to be a permanent structure

I would not classify a log splitter as a permanent structure. Unless you could prove you were using it to build fences with, but a bit of a stretch.

Send in a claim and you never know your luck .

AFAIK VAT can be claimed back on fixed to the ground equipment, ie bolted to the ground. Generators, milking machine, bulk tank etc. A log splitter would be pushing the boundaries a lot.
