I think Show me Heaven is the only Maria McKee song I know. I don’t think I have ever heard of Lone Justice. Also I didn’t know that Sweet Jane is a Velvet Underground song, as I never went passed their eponymous debut album. I liked this one, McKee’s voice sounds so fresh and there is great energy in the song.

I'll take that, with the added bonus of not having to sweat on the rest of the reveal. :D

    , Eminem feat. Dido-Stan

One of the few Eminem songs I like. Dido’s song Thank you on its own doesn’t say much to me, but it works great in Eminem’s song. The slower tempo of the song allows the lyrics to be heard properly and the song tells a great, rather sad story. Before I heard the rest of the songs I expected this to finish higher but there were a few surprises in the list and the familiarity factor brought it down a bit.

2025 gigs: Selofan, Alison Moyet, Wardruna, Gavin Friday, Orla Gartland, The Courettes, Nine Inch Nails, Rhiannon Giddens, New Purple Celebration, Nova Twins

Bad was one of the first cassettes I bought at the age of 15, so I’m very familiar with all songs, not just the singles. This song was a departure from his usual sound, and Quincy Jones’ production made it work well. Not my favourite MJ song and I used that as an excuse to send it a few places down when I had to start nitpicking.

    Great song

Crossed my mind but I think I submitted it before to a different Walrus

I didn’t expect to like this one, but I did. There is an almost poetic quality to the song. I’m not sure if it is the lyrics that tell a story or the way B. Dolan sings/raps, at certain points it felt like spoken word more than rapping. An interesting choice and a nice surprise.

I don’t remember this song although I have seen City of Angels, probably because I didn’t particularly liked the film. Johnny Rzeznik’s voice sounds really great in this one and I like the string arrangement. One of the songs that grew on me the most after repeated listening and climbed up a bit in the end.

    God I hate that song

I think (and I seem to be alone) that its the most overplayed, over-rated song in the last 20 years

One of the two Decemberists song in the list, a band that I don’t know at all. This one didn’t fare very well. It is a good song nevertheless, a solid melody and tempo, it made a case that The Decemberists are an interesting band that I need to search a bit more.

Tbf we have new people coming and going from Walrus all the time so it's likely they aren't familiar with songs already submitted

I think back then it came up in three in a row or something. I knew someone had commented on that, genuinely forgot it was me :p

One of my favourite Robert Palmer songs, great 80s sound to it. This was recorded at the Compass Point studio in Bahamas which was the place to be at that point in time. I like when his voice sounds softer like in this song or Mercy Mercy Me, his voice seems to adjust superbly depending on the arrangement of the song.

If it's in body parts, it's a clever choice - I had considered it for that category purely for that reason. Went with something else in the end.

I am not a fan of Leonard Cohen, I generally don’t fancy this type of soft folk/rock and was never taken by his voice. I liked this one though, a lovely soft melody and his voice sounds so soft in this one. I was used to his huskier voice from later years, so this was a nice change.

85, it's the longest Walrus in history (Triggers, Sully's and tusks don't count)

After 3 unsuccessfully attempts, RasTa and I finally find common ground with this great trip down the memory lane. This reminds me being a teenager, going to the discotheque on a Saturday night and dance all night – there was always a rock’n’roll section with the golden oldies from the 50s and 60s and this song would be part of it.

Rod Stewart is another great singer that I never really explored, as his best output was in the 70s. Maggie May is one of his songs that I know and kind of like, his characteristic voice sounding very good. It just got lost in the mix of interesting songs and couldn’t make it higher.

, The Decemberists-Won’t Want For Love (Margaret in the Taiga).

The second Decemberists song in this category. I loved the guitar in this one, there is something bluesy about it, without it getting too bluesy, if that make sense. I also liked the change around 2:30 where Colin’s part comes in. Becky Stark’s voice is slightly high pitched for my liking, but overall this was a great song and puts The Decemberists firmly in my radar.

Look at you putting in the effort of googling band member's names. Hope people don't get too acquainted with that level of commitment :pac:
