Questions on networking theory

    So I have 500meg virgin in my house. I have a long cable inside a wall to first floor.
    Virgin box is set to modem mode and wired to a net gear ac 1200 for WiFi.

    General questions.
    1. Why not just leave virgin in normal mode and run 2 networks?

    2. With virgin in modem mode, and net gear in WiFi mode, does it matter which box provides ethernet connections to a laptop, a home cloud etc etc?

    1. Why complicate things with 2 networls and the associated issues with routing between them unless you know your networking? For a home network there really isn't much need for 2 separate networks - if needed, check whether your Netgear router can do 2 networks.

    2. Yes it does - the Virgin modem/hub in modem mode does not provide any firewall etc for any devices connected dircetly to it - they are exposed publicly on the internet. You will receive separate public IP addresses on each ethernet port on the modem - I think only 2 of them will get IP addresses when in modem mode. You are better off putting everything behind the Netgear router to have them easily accessible at home.
