Automatic gate.

Have an outfarm 7 miles away where we keep late calving cows in a shed. Feed area with a straw lie back. I’d look at them around 9am feed them and lock them off the straw. Old man next door would come out that evening around 7 or 8 and pull a rope to open the gate to allow them back onto the straw for the night. Saves a lot of straw. He recently went to hospital and will probably go to a nursing home now.

What could I yoke up to open the gate automatically. There is power in this shed so a timer would work. But what could I plug into it to physically open the latch?

what about a GSM dialler? you automate the gate and put a dialler on it with a sim card and call it off your phone to operate the function.

10euro top up a year is all the GSM dialler costs

we have the house gates like that and you call them anywhere in the world and they auto open

Electric actuator on the latch?

Or electric winch to pull the rope

Cheapest / simplest would be plug in timer hooked to a small water pump that pumps water into container that pulls a rope when it drops with the weight of the water.
Electric latch or similar would work too but in a shed I'd stay away from electronics

If want off the shelf solution, a Batt-Latch Automatic Gate Release Timer which holds a fence wire and releases it at programmed time

It's a bit crystal maze

I'd go with a wiper motor and 12V timer, can be used with a battery if wanting to avoid mains voltage.

Exactly what I was going to recommend think it would work perfectly, have one here the last year for paddocks and never have current through the bungee and theres never any bother no cow ever tests it..

Re the reply about it being 400€ Pricey for what it is but invaluable in the handiness of it Could make cows graze out a paddock and set it to send them to the next break at 1 o clock or that used all year round could nearly do with 2 of them here

Here you go a programmable timer powered by 12v (car battery). It will switch 25A. Work the car wiper motor on the same battery.
Nice and simple and safe.
Recharge the battery every few days.

It's not just Pricey it's a fair rip off at that money. Guess they don't have much competition in the market. And it's €600 for the GSM model.

That's an interesting item, hadn't seen 12v timers like that especially capable of switching that much current, could make your own batt-latch, can get small 12v batteries
