The advert says 90k miles. The state of the drivers seat says different.

Slightly over... but might haggle within budget .

What are these 2.2 units like ?

Few common issues like exhaust manifold splits, dodgy injectors and clutch slip.

I’d still chance one though, they’re a likeable car.

    Hi All,
Just wondering can I post a copy of a failed NCT here for a VW Passat 03 TDI 1.9 ? - I am looking for your expert opinions is it worth fixing or scrap it and get another Banager.

B5.5 Passat with NCT until January (incl. extension). Looks decently clean despite bad pictures. Current owner since January this year. Could be worth a punt @ €600

Is it worth going to a garage getting this fixed.

Corroded brake lines could be expensive enough to fix, plus cv boots and ball joints. Then add your tyres.

Car would want to be immaculate otherwise to consider it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,200 ✭✭✭almostover

3 bald tyres, crap wiper blades, bottom ball joint and CV boot gone and rusty brake lines. NCT saved your life there buddy!

Joking aside, if the rest of the car is good I'd fix it. I'd estimate it'll cost €7-800 to put right provided the brake lines aren't too difficult to change. That much money wont buy you much better

You'd probably buy another NCT'd Passat or A4 for in or around what it would cost you to put that right, but you might well be landed with the same bill next year. If you put the money into the car you could drive it on for another while safe in the knowledge that its half decent anyway. IMO unless you're willing to upgrade/spend more money it wouldn't be worth changing car.

Almost 5 months NCT left on it and looks pretty tidy
Asking €1250. I doubt you'd get away with a grand, but with a good haggle, maybe 1100 Euro for a 2006 Prius wouldn't be too bad
Would almost tempt me to try a hybrid after years of diesels

    Although....

    OTJiZDhiMGEyNjdmMTJkNDMwNmYwOTVhZDJiMGQ0ZmJPsyWpKd0kZQO2XWiAFMSQaHR0cDovL3MzLWV1LXdlc3QtMS5hbWF6b25hd3MuY29tL2RvbmVkZWFsLmllLXBob3Rvcy9waG90b18xNDEwNzc4Njl8fHw2MDB4NjAwfHx8fHx8fHw=.jpeg

Same year, but only 2 owners compared to 6 on the one above
NCT until February 2021 and 25,000 miles less
Asking €1500. If that could be bought for around €1250-1300, I think I'd go for that one

On those Prius’s if you’re looking at Irish ones, look at ones with front fogs because they were bundled with cruise control and a 9 speaker JBL system. Called a Luxury pack, and definitely worth having.

Now it was possible to retrofit fogs to a base model, but rule of thumb would be if it hasn’t got front fogs then it hasn’t got the luxury pack.

    Nicely spec'd 06 Prius here, 1 owner and 200 km, NCT til 8/21, €1450

Have dealt with this seller before, sound guy. A wash and hoover would really tidy this up IMO

I thought the Prius had very low tax, that blue one is €400

If you'd be stepping sideways into another sub €1000 euro diesel then you'd be as well off fixing it.

2 budget to midrange tyres with a half decent rep most likely 15 or 16" even higher end ones won't break the bank

A ball joint (lower control arm with ball joint is like €50) and cv boot won't be too bad either shame its on the other side though the cv joint itself will still be most likely sound. Bit of work on the rear brakelines on one side.

Depends where you are in the country with regards pricing but anywhere rural and that should be sorted cheaply enough.

Run away Insignia are a terrible machine there cheap for a reason.
Engine tend to go bang suddenly on them tons of scrapped ones in breakers.

Okay thanks for the heads up. Car looks nice but don't want anything that's going to give me headaches.

What about this? Just a smidge over Bangernomics asking €2200, 2009 Volkswagen Passat 2.0 Comfortline

Read the advert description - priced to sell due to needing a few bits doing. To me that means it needs money spent on it so getting shot of it.

    Have a look at this:

Average 6.7 l doesnt looks normal imo...
My scenic 04 was doing less than 6 l...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 51,826 ✭✭✭✭bazz26

6.7 l/100km is 42 mpg which hardly makes it a gas guzzler. Anyway we don't know what sort of driving style the owner did to get to that figure. Laguna is a heavier car than a Scenic too.

Its difficult enough to spot a non JDM, and you are jumping out with Irish cars... ;)

I bought this camper, and a few other cars from the seller of that Octavia over the years. All positive experiences. Quite tempted to have a look at it when I am next over that direction!

Photo of tax disc from 09-18. Makes you wonder what it's been doing for the last 22 months.

Seller has binned the PSV tax discs I’m guessing!

Is that why the 130k miles might need investigating?

Only speculating. It’s low for an 11 year old diesel car, psv or not. Could well be a genuine reason for it. It’s not uncommon for fellas to retire out of work and buy a taxi to work 2 or 3 days a week
