If you show up, you’ll be directed to a pub car park in north Dublin and robbed of your money/car/phone.

Is that really happening Duke ? It is ripe for the picking, no doubt. Easy money for the scummier brigade.

This is a lovely looking 2008 Volvo S80
    NCT until March next year
Looks very clean inside also despite the usual Volvo leather creases
Asking €1550. Would be a nice buy around €1250-€1300

Had the v70 version for a while. One of the worst cars I've ever owned when it came to mpg, and I owned a 3.5 Ford Falcon in New Zealand..

About five or six years ago a brother of mine went to look at a 03 Almera for a friend who needed a runaround. I was away at the time but they found one of those ads and went to view this Almera. Turned out my brother actually knew the seller and your man says to my brother something along the lines of, I‘m not going to sell you this, just get back in your car and go home. He was sound about it strangely enough. There was a van with three lads in it parked across the road that my brother only noticed as they were leaving, the Almera left the car park right after my brother did and the van followed it up the road.

That looks a tidy little thing. A bit different. Useful tax too.

High spec Jazz with 12 months test, 1 previous owner, €1700

A bit pricey, but these are excellent cars - and they look great in this spec. Miles better than a Yaris if you don't specifically need a 1 litre.

    Jesus.

It was a 2008 high spec Passat diesel with 61k on the clock and the asking was €1650. Silver with black leather interior. I don't think the ad mentioned DMF etc but at that mileage it wouldn't have needed it yet. The ad was fairly well written and the pictures were good quality. If was up for 3 days.

Are the panel gaps on the drivers door OK?

    Looks a bit wrong.

Fella I bought the Scooby off, after 20 minutes of looking it over I said right time to go for a spin. As I was about to get in the car he says 'now you're definitely interested in taking it? Because the last time I sold a subaru there was a car waiting down the road and I was hopped on by 3 blokes'!

2003 C5, asking €650. Good spec for a nearly 20 year old car.

As far as I'm aware, this model has no DPF or DMF, but maybe @colm_mcm or somebody can confirm

Ended up getting the Kia Ceed. FSH, 220km, chain drive. It needed a service and a drop link but it seems ok.

Thanks Mike, Colm and Duke. And anyone else who replied.

09 petrol Avensis from a dealer. I'd imagine these are rare enough in petrol guise. Bit over bangernomics money, but seems to be in good condition with lowish mileage and the tax is not too bad. Not sure if it's vvti or valvematic. The valvematic are meant to be economical. I'd imagine being petrol they are reliable.

What are the most reliable diesel saloons in and around the bangernomics bracket? (willing to go up to €2.5k or so)

    Thank you :)

Not a bit biased here after 5 Passats and now in an A4 Avant, but anything VAG (VW, Audi, Seat, Skoda etc) :D

In all seriousness though, I think the 1.9 TDi especially is just a bombproof engine that will run forever if it's looked after any way right at all and no DPF etc

My wife ran a Volvo S40 MK2 with the 2 litre diesel engine for almost 3 years and that was pretty bang on also, and since that she has had a Saab 9-3 diesel and currently an Alfa 159 diesel, both of which use the same diesel engine, and they seem to be a very reliable engine too, although the Alfa (2008) has a DPF, but with the long drives it gets, that hasn't caused any issues so far

I'm like a scratched record at this stage but a 2008+ mk1 1.9tdi 100bhp octavia won't be beaten for reliability in the cheap tax era. 2008+ mk1 1.9tdi 115bhp superb worth considering too.

    2007 C180 Kompressor
Automatic with very low miles (115,000)
    NCT until May 2021
Most importantly on one of these, the timing chain etc was done 2 years ago, so should be a fairly safe bet for plenty of miles yet
Asking €1200. Would make a nice buy for a grand!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,090 ✭✭✭✭Duke O Smiley

Have a real soft spot for a facelift C Class in a nice colour. That looks lovely

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,720 ✭✭✭Mad_Mike

Between the timing chain history, low mileage and that price for a 07, it would make a lovely buy alright, plus there's just something about a Merc and an auto box, they go hand in hand together

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,152 ✭✭✭26000 Elephants

At that price, with that history it's a pretty inexpensive, risk free way to live the Mercedes dream. That car could well last 10 years without anything major happening, andbit will owe you nothing.

You wouldn't get a clapped out, bogger avensis for that money

When I was looking a few years ago I found a huge amount of well-priced diesel Saabs available in the UK. Apparently they're generally reliable cars. No idea if the VRT Nox levy is punitive around that price point.
