    Conversations with Friends

Hulu Boards Sally Rooney’s ‘Conversations with Friends’, Teams With BBC On Adaptation From ‘Normal People’ Author
Hulu has handed Sally Rooney’s Conversations with Friends a straight-to-series order, following the breakout success of Normal People.

The digital platform has boarded the 12-part show, which the BBC committed to in February. Although Hulu doesn’t disclose ratings, Normal People has been a social media phenomenon and has made stars of Daisy Edgar-Jones and Paul Mescal.

Conversations with Friends follows two female college students in Dublin who forge an unexpected, strange and sexually charged relationship with an older married couple, which results in a complicated pair of love triangles that upends their lives.

The half-hour drama also is produced by Element Pictures.

Normal People helmer Lenny Abrahamson will direct Conversations with Friends, and Alice Birch serves as lead writer. Ed Guiney exec produces alongside Andrew Lowe, Emma Norton, Rose Garnett Tommy Bulfin and Rooney and Abrahamson. Catherine Magee is series producer.

    Colin in Black & White

Colin Kaepernick's High School Origin Story to Become Netflix Limited Series
Spanning six episodes, the drama will focus on Kaepernick’s formative high school experience, “lending meaningful insight into the acts and experiences that led him to become the activist he is today,” per the official description. The project will follow Kaepernick’s upbringing as a Black child growing up with a white adopted family, chronicling his journey to becoming a great quarterback while defining his identity.

Kaepernick will executive-produce and narrate the series, while Ava DuVernay and Michael Starrbury — who previously collaborated on Netflix’s When They See Us — are also on board as EPs.

“Too often we see race and Black stories portrayed through a white lens,” Kaepernick said in a statement. “We seek to give new perspective to the differing realities that Black people face. We explore the racial conflicts I faced as an adopted Black man in a white community, during my high school years. It’s an honor to bring these stories to life in collaboration with Ava for the world to see.”

Added DuVernay, “With his act of protest, Colin Kaepernick ignited a national conversation about race and justice with far-reaching consequences for football, culture and for him, personally. Colin’s story has much to say about identity, sports and the enduring spirit of protest and resilience. I couldn’t be happier than to tell this story with the team at Netflix.”

A former quarterback for the San Francisco 49ers, Kaepernick made headlines in 2016 when he chose to kneel during the national anthem at NFL games, as a form of protest against systemic racism and police brutality. He left the 49ers after that football season concluded and remains a free agent.

    Unruly

Mahershala Ali to Play Boxing Legend Jack Johnson in HBO Limited Series
Two-time Oscar winner Mahershala Ali is climbing back into the premium cable ring to play legendary boxer Jack Johnson in a limited series in development at HBO.

Titled Unruly, the six-part series is being billed as “an unapologetically Black, no-holds-barred telling of Jack Johnson, the world’s first Black Heavyweight Boxing Champion. This bold exploration depicts the champion’s rise to athletic greatness and the costs he paid for his skin and defiance, which created a blueprint for Black resistance in every justice movement for generations to come.”

The project is based on Ken Burns’ PBS documentary Unforgivable Blackness: The Rise and Fall of Jack Johnson, as well as the accompanying companion book by Geoffrey C. Ward

Acclaimed playwright and Shameless co-producer Dominique Morisseau will serve as writer/EP alongside Ali and Tom Hanks. House of Cards creator Beau Willimon, who cast Ali in the Netflix political thriller, will be a Co-EP.

    The Midwich Cuckoos

‘The Night Manager’ Writer David Farr Teams With Sky To Adapt Novel That Inspired ‘Village Of The Damned’
EXCLUSIVE: David Farr, the British writer behind The Night Manager and Hanna, is developing an adaptation of John Wyndham’s sci-fi novel The Midwich Cuckoos for Comcast-owned European broadcaster Sky.

Deadline can reveal that Farr is working to turn the novel into an eight-part series after it was the inspiration for two movies last century, both of which were titled Village Of The Damned.

The TV remake is housed at ITV Studios-backed Route 24, which is run by Arlington Road producer Marc Samuelson, and Snowed-In Productions, the sister company of Bronte Film and Television, which produces J.K Rowling dramas including The Casual Vacancy and Strike.

Wyndham’s 1957 story centers on the sleepy English village of Midwich, where a strange sequence of events culminates in the community’s women falling pregnant with alien children with glowing eyes and otherworldly powers. It ranks alongside The Day Of The Triffids as being one of Wyndham’s most iconic works.

The Midwich Cuckoos was adapted twice for the cinema: the first time in 1960 by Wolf Rilla for MGM Studios, and then again by Halloween director John Carpenter in 1995. The latter was set in North Carolina, rather than England, and starred Christopher Reeve and Kirstie Alley.

I haven't watched it but isn't Netflix's Russian Doll a Groundhog Day idea turned into a series.

  • Registered Users Posts: 28,796 ✭✭✭✭CastorTroy

    Yeah it is.
Groundhog Day is the most famous example of a Time Loop film or series, so just use it as a handy way to describe those shows.
Both Happy Death Day films as well, for example. Then we have episodes of some series like X Files, Star Trek and Stargate (Poor Teal'c always getting hit by that door)

I really enjoyed Day Break, which was a short lived cop series with the same idea... each day approached like a new life in a Choose Your Own Adventure Book:
