Thoroughly respectable Volvo C70 convertible with tonnes of test

Small bit of tax on it.

Doesn't look too bad for the money really!

    Genuine mistake on my part.

Thanks for being so polite and helpful. This kind of thing is why I love boards.ie and didn't leave it for 5 years....

It will be 6 years out of test next time you come around so.

    Chape tax Hyundai i30 diesel.

Once it's not making noises going into reverse, this is probably the least risky cheap diesel you can get, No DMF, no DPF, and well built.
This one is reasonably well specced too

That's good to know Colm_mcm. As time moves on & we're looking at bangernomics diesels & only doing small mileage its good to know what doesn't have the dreaded DPF.

A little strong on price but looks lovely. A grand old boat to waft around in: https://www.donedeal.ie/cars-for-sale/mercedes-e240-elegance-auto-new-nct/25179163

Very overpriced but a rare care with an immaculate interior: https://www.donedeal.ie/cars-for-sale/jaguar-s-type-r/25132792

That E240 is overpriced. Nobody wants to tax a 2.6 when you can get them in 1.8 kompressor.
    I love those wheels though.

The Jag is just a regular 2.5 litre S type and not an R
The R is a different beast altogether with a 4.2 litre supercharged engine

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,720 ✭✭✭Mad_Mike

That Merc does look lovely alright. Pity about our ****ty motor tax rates. That car deserves to be driven for many more years, but road tax will sadly just kill it

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 73,328 ✭✭✭✭colm_mcm

The S Type is such an underrated car, Car guys mock them, but your average punter thought they were worth huge money back in the day. I bought one 8 years ago for small money and the amount of people who thought it cost a fortune was unreal. Totally different to say an E Class or a 5 Series in that respect.
It did have its shortcomings though, most of the interior was cheaply designed even if most of the materials were expensive.
It was much quicker than it looked too (3.0 manual)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,720 ✭✭✭Mad_Mike

I think it's mainly down to looks. The big grille wasn't everyones cup of tea, but I think they look well, kind of a natural progression of old Jag to a new more modern look while preserving the original Jag image, and like you say, people still perceive them to be a VERY expensive car

One of the worst adverts I've seen on Donedeal when it comes to description!
Leaving that to one side, this has NCT until January next year and I'm guessing there aren't even a handful of 156 Ti's left running in the country at this stage
If this was running any way right, it's got to be worth the asking price all day long
    Listed at €650

    Decent looking 2006 Volvo S40 MK2 diesel
It's the 2 litre version which is very reliable compared with the 1.6
Ran one of these for almost 3 years and other than servicing, I think it got a pair of springs on the rear and a front CV boot
With the 6 speed box and cruise control, I used to average around 52mpg (5.4l/100kms) on long runs and the heated seats were nice in the winter
NCT actually runs until January on this with the Covid extension
    Asking price is €750

Speaking of Alfas, here is a nice tidy looking petrol 159:

    NjAwOTNiODA3ZTI5N2FkNjBhY2I5OWY0ODk3MjBhOGLoV4uyyFpg2NQMAT9zWMm3aHR0cDovL3MzLWV1LXdlc3QtMS5hbWF6b25hd3MuY29tL2RvbmVkZWFsLmllLXBob3Rvcy9waG90b18xNDk4NDYyNzF8fHwxMjAweDEyMDB8fHx8fHx8fA==.jpeg

    https://www.donedeal.ie/cars-for-sale/low-mileage-belts-done-nct-alfa-159/25186278

Having previous NCT certs is a good sign. Asking 1200 but if you could get it for a grand then it looks like a half decent purchase.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,720 ✭✭✭Mad_Mike

Very low mileage and the fact the timing belt has been done also would make that a great buy at a grand
Pity the interior is just cloth, but still a lovely car

This one won't hang around for long!
2004 Bora 1.4 with only 90,000 miles and looks original
Last owner has it 5 years
Couple of months tax and NCT on it
    €525

Id love to tidy up that Type S, i'd say it'd come up a treat. Some car for the money.

Pity is a bit far from dublin...
New fron tyres and arch, maybe discs and pads and for 1k you have a top car

However bad the black paint looks in the pics, it’ll be way worse in the flesh. It’s a hoor of a flat black.

Yeah also the interior wear & tear should be major...

1 owner in Ireland (it's a UK import), and sold by a dealer, so some semblance of a warranty probably applies.

At the risk of sounding stupid, what is a DPF or an DMF?

    Why should they be avoided?

Diesel particulate filter (prone to clogging)
Dual mass flywheel (prone to failing)

Both circa €1000 to fix usually

Big oof. Fair enough. So the older i30s don't have it. Ok cool

Is that tape all over the front passenger-side wheel arch? Wonder what that's hiding...
The plastic trims on Hondas always fade really badly, something like this would sort it back to looking new. Then onto the interior....

It is indeed, it's holding the grey plastic strip on.

No such thing as sounding stupid
Asking questions is how we learn ;)

A DMF in a car is a dual mass flywheel. This is basically linked with the clutch and a lot of modern diesels use them to eliminate/suppress vibration, but the downside is they can be quite costly to repair if they give problems.

A DPF is a diesel particulate filter. Again, after a certain year, MOST diesel cars are fitted with them to reduce emissions even further than previous engines. The main issue with them is if the car is not getting long drives, they can become choked up as the DPF is not reaching temperatures high enough and long enough to burn off the carbon deposits it traps inside

[EDIT]Doh!! Maybe next time I should look and see that there is another page of replies already answering the question before I reply!!!!![?EDIT]

The clips on the arch trims break and then the arch trim hangs off. Even catching a mudflap on something is enough to tear the trim off.

This particular part is quite expensive from Honda and not readily available used because it’s different to the non Type S trim.

It’s quite easy to keep the plastic looking good. The likes of Polytrol is great for it.

I appreciated the explanation. Are there any other older diesel that avoid this issue or is it all diesels older than 2009/2008
