    Hello everyone,

Wondering if there is anyone who is well versed in Insurance for cars over around 350bhp and if there is any chance through any companies for someone who is say, a 22 year old male with four years no-claims to be insured on something such as an RS3. Finding it very frustrating that in the States 20 year olds are insured on 5.3 Litre Chevy Silverado's for less than 2000 dollars but yet over here I'm getting quoted 4 grand on a 1.2 Polo. Appreciate it if anyone has any info, thanks!

Get 3 refusals and go to the Declinded Cases Agreement route

I'm aware of its existence but any idea of what the costs will look like?

I'll give them a call when I can, online quote seems to be bringing up nothing though so probably unlikely :/

A lot of the online systems are set to refuse to quote for out of the ordinary policies, you are going to have to ring around. Of course they won't tell you this up front so you waste your time giving these fekkers all your personal information online and then have to repeat it all to a call centre drone.

More than the 4k they are quoting you for the Polo.

If 4 grand is the best quote you can find on a 1.2 polo you need to look harder. Call quote devil they specialise in young drivers and high performance cars

I have never understood the fascination with people just wanting to get quotes online or asking advice for how much X vehicle will be to insure. Pick up the phone and call some insurance companies.

It's 2020, people don't want to take a full day off work to dick around ringing every insurance company in the country just to get a fúcking reasonable price for an essential thing to drive a car.

4K isn't the best quote I've gotten by any means but it is one of the more ridiculous things I've been quoted from Axa. I've tried brokers before like First Ireland but always ends up with nothing. I'll call more brokers like QuoteDevil then since clearly the online systems just aren't meant to be but I mean at the end of the day it's an absolute nightmare for younger drivers, even up to 30 from what I've seen to try get quoted on anything over your standard 2 litre Turbo diesels or any petrol engine that packs any kind of punch. As if road tax and VRT weren't enough...

Endless waiting while on calls too only to get someone telling you that they have nothing for you.

It's bad enough that unlike the UK we can't simply use a few comparison sites to get a good overview of the available market. Having to use a dozen web forms on each company site takes long enough, the idea of doing all that over the phone, just no.

Lol. Perhaps you call different insurance companies to me but most take calls on weekends and you don't have to spend all day on the phone. How long does a call for a quote take, 10 minutes, 15 minutes?

I do not understand why anybody would need to take a day off work to call insurance companies.

The only chance you have on something remotely sensibly priced for a high powered car is to go for a classic car/policy/tax.

Not really what I'm looking for though but I guess it is one of the best options. Sad at the lack of options for actual modern performance cars however and especially for younger drivers.

I've used online and offline for quotes. For anything out of the ordinary if an online engine won't give you a quote then when you ring the office you still can't get a quote, that's for a driver with 20 years NCD+ for a Lexus.

With your age most classic policies wont touch you either as some insist both driver and car is over 25.

In terms of your rs3, if its over 10 years old ypu’ll also face a massive uphill battle with insuring it.

Try ringing around, ive found calling aviva or coverinaclick have been helpful , at 22 with 4 years ncb I was insured in a 735i for 1200 quid.

These things are also impacted by what youre currently driving . If youre coming from a polo etc.. its going to be painful no matter your age etc.. if youre currently insured on a 2 litre car, get a 2.5 litre, then a 3 litre then get your rs.

It’s about efficiency. An insurance company can spec up 100 questions for an online app and ascertain an appropriate categorisation for the driver. Quote might not be lower but the ease and efficiency will be much greater. I actually must compare the market/confused.com and the ability to assess 95% of available quotes. (Hastings/Direct Line who are also online would be the balance.)

Brokers have been around forever. Let them do the donkey work. I don't understand why people utilise their free time phoning insurance companies, or even worse going online, when it usually cheaper and a lot less hassle via a broker.

To be fair that was 2012 , but even by the same logic at 26 I was insured in a 645ci for 1900 fully comp. it helps that ive never owned a car under 2.5 litre so scaling up to ‘bigger’ cars was never really a risk factor

That is quite a bargin indeed. Thing is if it is based on engine size I'm kinda screwed then. Driving a 1.4 TFSI A3 with 150BHP which is more than most of the 2 litre Diesels out there anyway. With the RS3 though I really hope there's some luck with it soon enough before anyone won't be able to drive anything over 4 cylinders anymore. It definitely won't be older than 10 years which should help a bit right?

I'm a good bit older than 22, but found that AIG and Bank of Ireland Insurance came in as best value for insuring my S5 this year. BOI are underwritten by RSA as are 123, who refused me a quote on their website.

Thanks mate! Guess I'll try all of the brokers and companies that have been mentioned on this thread so far and if not I don't really know what to do about it. Maybe the RS3 will have to be put on hold for a bit. Just hope it won't be too late :)

As you probably know the insurers understand that a 22yo with limited driving experience and such a powerful car is
going to use it for racing and not just to and back from work.
So is quite a risk to themselves and the car, and other cars around them.
You're just a higher risk for the insurer and thus it costs more.

Not exactly the answer to your question but have you considered a b8 or 8.5 S4? 3.0 supercharged that will do 500hp with a few tweaks and in my experience far more insurance friendly. They also have the better 4wd system with up to 90/10 split to the rear or front instead of max 50/50 on the rs3 and if you get one with the optional sports diff you can send up to 90% to just one wheel, (they drive amazing with the diff :))

Also tax is only 1200 for an early one or 570 for a later one

Yeah I obviously agree that I am a much higher risk especially with that car but I'm not even getting a higher price, I'm not getting quoted at all. The point was that it's infuriating that in other countries people younger than 22 can get quotes for the same car well under 2000 while meanwhile here even 40+ will be paying a minimum of 400-500 quid. Also, not my intention to take the car around for a rally race around the streets of Dublin every time I drive it although I am aware of why people would think that.

Definitely something I'll consider especially since you say it's more friendly with insurers. I'm assuming the modifications to add 100+ HP aren't supposed to be declared or otherwise they won't be so nice :D

I'd say you won't get any quotes and if you go down the 3 decline route your looking at €10k

No insurance company wants that risk.
