You can't talk about Lost without taking the ending into consideration. The show was all about building up anticipation through mystery and suspense without ever intending on bringing the mysteries to a conclusion. It is one of the biggest cons in history.

Yep, in the ens a massive disappointment which shat upon all its promise.

Although I can't remember anticipating each episode every week that much for any other show.

    Juliet is the correct answer

I was sticking with the original 3. Of course Juliet is always a good pick

I absolutely loved it. Spent hours reading fan theories and I dont think a show gripped me as much until GoT came along and while they wrote themselves into a corner and certainly not the way I would like them to have gone I still think the heart of the finale and payoff was excellent.

The "We have to go back" scene I don't think I have had a bigger OMG moment watching a TV show before or since.

Characters were nothing short of excellent and I don't think any of the core cast weak or a boring (Maybe Walt).

I must give it a rewatch at some point but anyone who has not seen it I would reccomend it but just expect the quality to dip towards the end while still being good.

Must also say the fourm on Boards were an excellent group and the breakdown of each episode each week was great

Jack saying "we have to go back" is still the first thing that pops into my head when anyone says anything similar

Do you have to suspend disbelief to watch it?

Not initially, but be prepared to suspend it if you continue through the seasons.

    Deffo worth a watch though.

    It's a great show

Just don't get too caught up in trying to figure out what's going on or looking for explanations in how X happens, how it affects Y etc. Focus on the characters, their relationships and the importance of their past lives versus them on the island. All the things that might require you to suspend disbelief are just there to push the characters into different situations.

The Walking Dead, even in it's first few years, wasn't unmissable TV in the same way though. Never has a show been so embraced despite it constantly meandering in quality.. seasons would often end well but then you'll be back to tiresome episodes for the first half of the following season. I haven't watched it in probably 4 seasons now.

Lost, as bad as it was near the end, had very strong characters and story arcs to the end.. Daniel Faraday for example.

I loved Faraday. He, Desmond and Juliet were my favourite characters.

And completely agree about The Walking Dead. The hype was there for the first few seasons, but never has a show of that scale done so little to continue for so long. It has 5 okay episodes per 16-episode season; first & last episodes per half-season, and maybe one proper character episode in the season too. The rest is filler.

Lost always had some filler, no doubt about it. But there were always far more decent episodes with proper character development, and major plot moments or deaths could still happen at any time in the season.

Think I gave up towards the end of the second series, there was only so much silliness I could take. Blows my mind that people stuck it out to the end, the plot moved at such a glacial pace I don't know how they did it.

One of the best shows ever. Got to season 3 or 4 when it first came out, then missed a few episodes and never went back to it.

Watched it all in about the space of two weeks a few months back. It's a highly addictive show

Only season 1. Thought it started going down after that so I gave up after a couple of episodes of season 2 and never bothered again. Never saw any of the final season/episode so no ideas of the ending and no interest.

Loved the show but was gutted with the decline in the final seasons. I think the writers got caught up in their own hype and wrote themselves into a corner from which they could not escape. When they started talking about how not every mystery needed to be explained, it was such a letdown to those of us who had been following the mysteries. The writing was on the wall at that stage.

The first two seasons I have fond memories of, and it was a lot of fun to follow the fan theories. One that I remember being good was a website called something like 'Lost is a game' where they argued the entire show was a simulation and that each episode contained clues about it. Whoever came up with it seemed to put more thought into it than the writers.

The forum on Boards was fun, and the experience of staying up until 6am or so to watch the finale on Sky was pretty special. Just wish there had been a decent plan to wrap it all up. Hated all the later Jacob/Smoke Monster interactions and what happened to the character of Locke.

My avatar would be a giveaway that I was a fan.

Overall, I really enjoyed it. The last season was largely muck but it made event TV like no other.

    Moments like
    Desmond in the bunker
    and
    "We Have To Go Back"
.. it was just hugely exciting TV.

Two of the best TV moments of all time,
    "We Have To Go Back"
    especially

The forum on Boards was fun

It was great with nice regulars in there too

Why were all the TV subforums deleted? The major show ones like Lost should've been archived

    TV Mods; any ideas?

Most of the sub-forums, Lost included, were merged into the main Television forum. So the threads are still here... somewhere.

It's funny (In my opinion anyway)when you see how bad an ending can all but ruin a good show (Looking obviously at game of thrones but to a much lesser extent say HIMYM) that Lost in my opinion.... really wasn't that bad..... just disappointing

Were all the old threads deleted? Would be interested to read the final episode thread back again.

I absolutely adored the first season and the second season. What killed it for me was the whole time travel concept- once they were off the island, all the tension and mystery was lost and there was no reason to care about the characters or what was going on behind the island.

It reeked of a show that promised so much but got swept up completely in its own hype and money-making spin offs that the original story was either dropped, and in its place a heap of make-it-up-as-we-go-along nonsense to drag out the air time, or characters were changed so much we didn't recognise them. I believe the guys who made the first season moved on after that, so it was never going to end as logically as something like Breaking Bad, which had a clear start, middle and end.

Lost just dragged on to a terrible and unsatisfying finale with a lot of the mysteries just fizzling out. Why such a series-long emphasis on the numbers if the meant nothing? They were dead all along! The monster was just an old ancient evil? Complete rubbish and a classic example (like Westworld) of a tv series that disappeared up its own ar%e.

If you thought the plot of Lost moved slow then God help you with some of the greatest Dramas of all time like The Sopranos

Never saw an episode. I never did get Lost.

What was it about, is it worth a look

Plane crashes on an island. Survivors realise the island.... is not what it seems.... And then a bunch of really crazy sh*t happens for 6 seasons. Most episodes also tend to focus on one character, showing flashbacks of their life before the island.

It's a decent watch, but nearly hard to recommend just because of how polarising it is. You'll either love it or hate it, and almost no-one here (or yourself) could likely guess which it'd be. It probably is better as a binge watch considering you don't have to wait as long for answers all the time or long waits between seasons.

As I said in a previous post, if you focus on the characters and their stories and relationships rather than the "mystery" of all the crazy stuff, there's a hell of a lot to enjoy.

This may be my favourite moment of TV of all time I think. There are shows that I prefer, that will better stand the test of time, but nothing will match this reveal again in my opinion. It's closest rival is the other scene mentioned above.

I'd love to read an article outlining TVs biggest moments but I'm sure it'll be spoilery as hell.

Also, anyone who enjoyed Lost should definitely, without a doubt, check out The Leftovers. One of the best shows I've seen in years, partly from one half of the Lost showrunners (Damon Lindelof). You can definitely feel the influences of Lost, but it also doesn't fall into the same flaws that Lost did. It's absolutely superb.

I loved Lost. I have never spent as much time talking about a tv show in all my life as I did for Lost. It was so different to anything I had ever watched before. I didn't love the ending but I didn't hate it the way many did.

    Oh and I fancied Sayid.

    The ending wasn't that complex..

... why do people keep stating "they were dead along"? Really frustrates me!

What happened so if that wasn't the case?

Very good show until the last season. Difficult to remember each season at this stage, but most of all I enjoyed the third to last and second last season I think. Some great television and sequences. It had some brilliant characters played by very good actors and i frickin loved Evangeline.
I always thought I would rewatch it, but that last season ruined it a bit.

I remember watching the last episode of this and 24(original run) on the same night. Two great shows that unfortunately lost their way by the end.

I always assumed it was people who stopped watching after the first or second season, then came back for the series finale to see what the "answer" was and were unsurprisingly left completely confused and reverted to the popular theory from first season. (ABC inadvertently encouraged this theory by playing b-roll from the pilot episode over the end credits.)

The show really wasn't difficult to follow. I mean the characters spend almost no time actually talking about the island or its mythology - a rule set by Abrams at the beginning. The show's plotting was extremely simple compared to the puzzlebox incoherence of Westworld. You don't actually need to understand the mythological stuff to follow Lost, which was always far more about whether Kate would choose Jack or Sawyer than it was ever about polar bears or hatches.
