Get a Totota HiAce, you'll have plenty left over for a good pocket sprung mattress for the back.

That's probably the first suggestion the OP might get insurance on :)

Probably stretching your budget, https://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/202005089230208?postcode=cv92pz&onesearchad=New&onesearchad=Nearly%20New&onesearchad=Used&fuel-type=Hybrid%20%E2%80%93%20Petrol%2FElectric%20Plug-in&sort=price-asc&make=BMW&radius=1500&advertising-location=at_cars&page=1 vrt is 600 euro, it will do 0 to 62 in 6.1 seconds 249BHP

There is a Mercedes c350e 0 to 60 in 5.9 seconds, but another 2000 pounds vrt would be around the same.

Where in Ireland would you be needing to do 0-60 in 5.9 seconds? Unless you're being chased/in an emergency.

Sure, why bother getting up in the morning, you will only have to go to bed again that night...

Alfa Romeo Giulietta or a 159.

    Both savage cars.

    Beat me to it :-)

I was gonna suggest he buy some kinda van or blacked out estate car.

Throw a couple of duvets in the back, park it up outside the disco and away you go.....

All joking aside : have owned a few nice car derived vans and estates. Super useful for carrying stuff (and did I mention sleeping in them).

2010 Mercedes E250 Coupe, mate of mine who'd be 25 but of similar driving experience got one for 8.5k and the insurance was 1700 fully comp. Does 43mpg on the motorway too.

would also take a look at the newer Mercedes a class (not the old ugly one)
bmw 1 series or an audi a3 , the 1.8tsi turbo petrol is a fantastic engine to drive in those.

My parents aren't much craic, if I was I could sleep in the car and pop into lectures the following morning but I'd never get the smell of beer out of the carpets..

Has to be quicker than a 1.4 Golf though :)

After all the cock waving.... I think we all know he's going to go out and buy a newer Golf (probably a 'sporty' diesel, GTD or GTTDI etc.)

The cock waving would appear to be in your head. To each his own.

I'm trying my best to avoid it..

I don't want a smelly diesel but the low road tax..
Even on a relatively new Mx-5 ND, it's up on €700.

I'm tempted by an Audi TT, albeit a diesel..

Ah they have a point though.. It's very easy to just say 'oh yeah I like Golfs, a diesel would be very economica...' and I'd bore myself and everyone else to death.

Out of left field, we have the Fiesta ST. Great fast car, cheap to run and cheap to ensure.

Nice looking car, bit out of my budget though.
Heard they make a great sound too

I know they're great cars, a coworker of mine has a remapped 1.6 that he adores.

Yeah, but go drive as many cars as you can before ruling stuff in or out.

Fiesta ST is the best small hatch money can buy, they are cheap, you'll get a 2016 for around €14k. 280 tax, insurance isn't bad on them if you don't live in a rough area and they are cheap to run, I averaged around 37 mpg in my old one since buying it new over the guts of 3 years, and i drove it like they are supposed to be driven every day. Probably the best fun I've ever had in a FWD car, only sold it as i was getting married and needed something more sensible with a bit more space.

    The ND started in 2015.

No the motor tax is much lower than that. MX5 ND is a 1.5 l engine with 139 mg CO2 - which is €280.

Maybe the 2l engine is more. I find the MX5 ND 1.6l is a fantastic car to drive. It has good low down torque and a very good gear shift, and very good road handling.

    Do not buy a 2008 MX5 as the motor tax is €750, while the 2007 and 2009 MX5 is €570 or €560.

[It is because the CO2 figure on the 2008 (NC) is just above the CO2 limit figure, while the 2009 (NC2) is just below it, while the 2007 (NC) is on cc.]

I'm confusing the NC and ND apologies!

I'd love an ND but they're just out of budget.

    I'm after getting quoted €1400 on a 2010, 3L Diesel Audi A5

    You try a 330d or a 325d?
The road tax is much more palatable if my memory is correct
