Motor tax query

I bought a car which hasn't been taxed since August 2019. Just received log book this morning and tried taxing it online but keep getting error message saying I need to fill out RF100A form. The tax offices are closed for obvious reasons so what can I do?

Also do I need to pay backdated tax from August?

Top right / front page of new reg cert. last 6 digits is PIN for online motor tax as far as I recall.

No, you are not liable for back tax, just from the month of purchase.

What about the RF100A form? How do I get that completed when tax office is shut?

Print it off and send in with applicable fee if one due....

How do I know if there's an applicable fee due?

    Just enter your PIN
Your PIN is the last six digits of your Vehicle Registration Certificate Number
Enter that and the registration and then choose how many months tax you want to pay and pay it online
No need to send in any forms etc

Ah right, I completely misread this, I thought you had the car since then....

You do as above and can also sign it off the road if necessary....

You won't be eligible for back tax as that's wiped as new owner.

You can request a pin if it doesn't work using the last 6 digits.

Have tried that and keep getting this when I log in (check attachments)

Are you inputting all details correct....

The VLC form on the front top right hand corner, has a code, use the last 6 numbers on this....

The harp crest is on the page.

I think the issue is the need for you to account for the lost tax period on your car. You do not have to pay it, you are not liable, but the tax office have to know the details of the non taxed period so there computer can then say "Yes".
Im readind note 4.2 on the RF100A form and thats my take on it.

Never had to account for non tax of any car I bought as once ownership is changed, all arrears are wiped out.
It looks like its down to the fact that the "system" hasn't updated yet with the new details, even though the cert was issued
Very odd though. Never encountered it before.
I'd say try giving them a buzz on 061 365005 and see if they can help you out

As a matter of interest, if you go to https://www.motortax.ie/OMT/changeOwnership.do and input the vehicle reg there, does it give the details of the change of ownership?

Yes it updated. I'll give them a call and see what story is.

Is it a car that was previously exempt from tax, or is it a commercial or ex taxi or something unusual?

It was previously a commercial vehicle.

How can it "previously" have been a commercial and is now no longer a commercial? Have you paid additional VRT on it after a recent conversion?

Oh Christ. It’s a 4 seat Kuga or a crewcab of some sort?

As in the new owner isn't eligible for the €333 tax

Ah I see, the persob I bought it off had it registered as commercial so I need to now register it as a non commercial then tax it?

Yes, this is the issue, it's easy going private but by God you're lucky you're not trying it the other way ....

It is a commercial vehicle if its a 4 seat Kuga. Doesn't matter how you use it or how its taxed, neither will change the fact its a commercial vehicle.

Does it have a valid CVRT? If so, you should be able to tax it online at the private rate based on engine size. Will still require an annual CVRT.

Ok so rang the person I bought van off it's a transit connect btw. It was a commercial vehicle since 2017. When I bought the van he just sent log book as usual so it's still listed as a commercial vehicle atm however I now need to change it back to non commercial.

All tax offices are closed so don't know how I go about reverting back to non commercial.

But sure that makes no odds to you unless you want to continue paying as commercial but you would need a valid reason such as business.

You will pay the cc rate on the engine.

Cheers for all information. Any idea how I go about changing status with current covid restrictions?

Is it a crewcab or a panel van? I.e, does it have rear seats?
