    Is it true that win xp has a firewall as standard? If so could someone point me to its settings?

    XP Pro has one included, not too sure about XP Home, there should be an option to enable it when you right-click on a specific dialup (etc) connection and view the properties... the firewall can be enabled from the right-most tab on that page if I recall correctly - sorry I don't have XP in front of me right now :confused:
    Also make sure you've got the ICS/ICF service enabled*.
    (* Right-click 'My Computer'=>Manage=>Services)
    Again I don't have XP infront of me so the service name there is only approximate.
    XP's help system has a good bit of information on the firewall, do a search.
