I admire anyone who is working to tackle Covid-19, but this project looks wrong-headed to me. Pouring time and effort into a ground-up device design, when effective ventilators have been available for decades, seems a waste. They are fairly complex pieces of equipment, which can easily kill patients if they fail.

Asking a big vent manufacturer to open-source one of their older designs (without guarantee), then rolling out production of this on a wide scale might be an alternative.

I get that this is intended as a field based tool of last resort, but surely they'd just ambu bag them manually in this case?

There's a few different groups working on this.

The litigation issue is a big one if you ask me. The courts tend not to deal with these types of situations very well.
